Bone cancer. Two words no one wants to hear from a doctor, least of all a 12-year-old boy.

In January 2023, Jesse Ehrlich was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, an aggressive cancer in his right femur. He was hospitalized immediately, and chemotherapy began within a week.

Three months of chemo later, limb salvage surgery took place. Surgeons removed more than half of Jesse’s femur, his knee, and part of his tibia, replacing the bone with prosthetics.

Though the surgery was successful, unthinkable complications followed: A massive infection led to another major surgery and repeat stays in the ICU. In June, another diagnosis: Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, a result of the repeated leg trauma.

An intensive pain management program eventually enabled much-needed physical therapy to begin. Chemo also resumed, and after completion in October, Jesse was discharged. Less than 48 hours later, however, he fell getting into bed and broke his hip, resulting in another three-week hospital stay.

Jesse, who also has Type I Diabetes, continues to endure more than any child should. The years ahead will be filled with more physical therapy, scans, screenings, and multiple surgeries to lengthen his leg prosthetics as he grows. He hopes to walk on his own again one day soon.

The ordeal has also been hugely challenging for parents Tamara and Daniel ("DD" to his friends at HITS Magazine) and older brother Randy. The months of care and worry have been exhausting. But that’s not all.

Daniel and Tamara have done everything right to care for their son. They have the best insurance they can afford. They pay their bills. But Jesse’s harrowing year with cancer has resulted in overwhelming medical expenses. They applied for loans but have been turned down simply because DD works as an independent contractor.

Now the situation is critical. Credit cards are maxed out, insurance deductibles just reset and more bills are coming in.

We do not ask this lightly, but the need is urgent and real: Please help.

Jesse needs us.
