COVID-19 Fund for Nauru Refugee Family of 5 in NJ

Donation protected
Diloson and Rinsiya have no idea how they’re going to pay for food for their three children this month, let alone how they’ll pay for rent.

Like thousands of other recently arrived refugees, they live pay-check to pay-check but may not be eligible for the American emergency COVID-19 assistance.

The Aussie-run Ads-Up Refugee Network has created this emergency GoFundMe and linked it directly to the family’s bank account.  If you can, please chip in now to help give them a fair go, so they can cover rent, food and can continue to provide for their three young children >>

Seven years ago, the family fled targeted violence in Sri Lanka. Days before they finally made it to Australia, the government instituted a sudden change to the refugee policy, meaning they were sent to offshore immigration detention rather than resettled, like those who arrived just days earlier.

The family spent five years stranded on Nauru in conditions condemned by the UN and Amnesty International before being resettled in New Jersey. After finally getting their lives back on track, the COVID-19 crisis has thrown the family into limbo, with dad’s hours being drastically reduced.

Diloson and Rinsiya are among more than a dozen Nauru refugee families who were in the early stages of rebuilding their lives in the USA when the COVID-19 crisis hit. Parents who were finally able to work and send their children to school, are finding themselves destitute without any safety net.

Ads-Up hopes by requesting donations, of any size, for this family, we can increase their stability, ensure their health and wellbeing and show them that everyday people are behind them, wanting them to succeed.

The town where the family lives has over 8,000 current cases of COVID-19 and without a car or financial stability it is incredibly difficult to source groceries, hand sanitiser, face masks and health services.

Before the New Jersey COVID-19 lockdown, Diloson found work in the food industry, where he continues to work at drastically reduced hours. Rinsiya cares for their three beautiful children, son Sanoshan (13), daughter Serafina (5) and son Edsaroon (5 months old). The family are scared for their health, and worry when Dilson has to go to work.

Like many parents across the globe, Mum and Dad are doing their best to keep their children engaged and schooled from home. Diloson says he is grateful to still be employed during this period, however with a drastic cut in his hours, paying rent and purchasing food is becoming increasingly difficult.

Please chip in what you can, it will be deposited directly to the family’s account the next day.
