Jaylyn needs a Heart

A couple of months ago our boy Jaylyn Rongo was playing league and appeared to be a healthy, fit 17 year old young man with his whole future ahead of him.  He celebrated his graduation from high school and had begun working a summer job.  Soon after he got a virus and on the 21st of December he was admitted to Redlands hospital in Brisbane as he was having difficulty breathing.  They told us he had an enlarged heart and a blood clot.  From this day on the news kept getting worse and all our lives and priorities have changed.

Jaylyn is now in ICU at Prince Charles hospital in Chermside, Brisbane, awaiting a heart transplant.  He has Cardiomyopathy (heart failure) which we have since learned is hereditary, his maternal grandfather passed away at the age of 60 with the same condition.

On the 12th of January Jaylyn had surgery to implant a permanent VAD (Ventricular Assist Device) also known as a pump on the left side of his heart. While in surgery they found they also needed to put a temporary pump in the right side of his heart.  This procedure took just over six hours and was necessary to keep his heart going until a new heart can be found.

There continue to be a number of challenges and Jaylyn is now a priority on the heart transplant list.  Our boy has been nothing short of amazing.  Along with his mother (who has barely left his side) they have listened to doctors telling them things no one ever wants to hear about themselves or someone they love.  While he remains in hospital we are supporting his mother and her partner to stay at a Hotel right next door to the hospital.  They are a five minute walk away which enables them to be there with him from early morning until late in the evening and if needed, a sprint away in between times.

We are grateful for all the love that has surrounded us all, however this journey is likely to be a long one and until his new heart comes along we are unsure how long he may remain in hospital.

Ariana is handling all funds for this fundraiser, she is Jaylyn's mother.
