Dr. Jason B. Phillips was the consummate scholar and a multiskilled academic. He was passionate about all aspects of academia, including quantitative and qualitative research methods, epistemology, mentoring, networking, and service. During his academic pursuits, Jason always exhibited the highest level of professionalism. He respected, supported, and assisted numerous individuals in the academic community, whether they were interns, undergraduates, fellow graduate students, or faculty. Jason was highly intelligent and educated at elite institutions yet he remained humble; his love and care extended to all he encountered, regardless of rank, affiliation, or any other classification. His passion for his academic work and the community he studied propelled his extraordinary work ethic.

The Dr. Jason B. Phillips Foundation aims to support the academic and professional pursuits of Black male scholars like Jason. As a graduate student, Jason was committed to professional networking, mentoring, and research, endeavors which are often made difficult for Black male graduate students due to a lack of institutional support and funding. Despite these challenges, Jason was an active scholar whose presence was widely felt. The Foundation will support Black male graduate students who face similar challenges by providing funding for conference travel, research methods training, networking and mentoring opportunities, and data collection. It is our hope that the efforts of the Foundation will help encourage Black male graduate students to carry on Jason’s legacy through academic work that is grounded in community-mindedness, compassion, respect, and excellence.

The organizing committee is planning several fundraising efforts in the near future, including an event to be held during the annual meetings of the American Sociological Association in August in New York City.
