Jamaal’s Journey to Victory

A few words from Jamaal

Hey everyone, most of y’all that are coming here know of me or know me personally. Either from Aviano, Italy, Minot, North Dakota, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Firefighting, or Coaching. Most of you are very good friends or family. Those of you who are not, I am equally blessed that you have taken the time to come this far.

I, we, my family have come to the circumstances very quickly that require us to reach out for helping hands, or blessings as I begin my battle to destroy this horrible cancer that has intruded my body and livelihood.

On 02/22/2022, I had the demoralizing phone call that my endoscopy pathology report was positive for cancer cells. On 03/03/2022, I received my second phone call (after a second endoscopy) that the cancer was indeed gastric and a monster called Signet Ring Cell Adenocarcinoma.

At this point the hysteria set in, but also the reality that I have not only myself but a beautiful family that I need to fight for. Giving up or giving in, is not, has not, and will not be an option.

I created this funding channel for several reasons, but the most glaring issue will be the expenses associated with the armory needed to fight this battle. Not only our immediate expenses such as co-pays, but for hotels, gas, etc.

We currently do not have a vehicle due to our primary vehicle’s engine failing after a costly attempt to fix it, and our secondary vehicle being stolen a few days before my diagnosis (you can’t make this up). We are currently looking for a vehicle while renting which is very costly.

I wear a few hats, some bigger than others. First and foremost, I’m a proud loving dedicated father of two fantastic children, Jamaal Jr (JJ, 15 years) and Jasmine (10 years). I also have a significant other, Melissa, who has gifted me four adult children Austin, Kaylin, Josh, and Alexus. The gift of the adult children has given me four grand babies, all girls and two that are very attached to Maal-Maal’s hip.

I am a high school football coach at Penn Manor where I take pride in collaborating with an amazing coaching staff, utilizing our passion and life lessons to guide young men through life’s challenges all while trying to perfect the amazing game of football.

I also retired from semi pro football last year, the Lancaster Cyclone family are a group of men and women that support one another no matter what. Cyclone Nation will always hold a piece of my heart.

Recently, I was accepted as a volunteer firefighter at West Willow Fire Station. I spend ample time learning the intricacies of firefighting from a brotherhood of men that just understand life. This is a new adventure but from the military to working in the juvenile justice system, I have not been around a group of men that cherish tradition as well as doing the right things all while being selfless with saving lives as their number one priority.

Last but not least, I attend Journey Church in Strasburg, Pa. Growing up a military brat, church was always something our family embodied. From the good times to the bad, we always kept our faith. I found a home in Journey Church where we are led by an amazing Pastor ( Alex Rivera ) who “just gets it.” I am not an official member there, but I feel like one whether I attend physically or online I feel at home. My comfort with having cancer is knowing that God is on my side through this whole journey, and this gives me warmth and a power that’s hard to explain. I am not afraid, I am ready, and I have faith that with the power of my friends and family, their friends and family, and prayers all in the name of our almighty…I will prevail victorious in this hurdle in my life.

All I ask is for your continued prayers, your generosity, and a full understanding of the difficulties surrounding such a fight. This is hard for me to do as a man, but I know it’s necessary for me to win this ugly fight. Please don’t feel obligated to help, but please share and keep my message alive…together “we” will beat this unwanted disease.

Thanks,
