Heather: Struggling With a Terminal Illness
This is my beautiful cousin, Heather Finlayson Brassard (second from left), and her loving family. For at least 7 years, Heather has been battling multiple myeloma -- cancer of the bone marrow and plasma cells -- which affects her bones, specifically, her spine, hips and ribs. This disease is incurable, and barring a miracle, it will eventually take her life. She also has gastroparesis, has difficulty digesting food, and now weighs less than 100 pounds.
Severe Pain, Inadequate Insurance
Heather is in chronic, severe pain, as well as fatigue from the cancer and from the chemotherapy that’s keeping her alive. She travels frequently to Cancer Centers of America in Philadelphia for treatment. I have started a Go Fund Me page for her because her health insurance will not pay for medical equipment that she needs, and her medical bills are mounting. Heather needs a hospital-type bed so that she can rest more comfortably. She presently sleeps as much as she is able in a recliner, since her pain makes sleeping in a traditional bed impossible. But her insurance has refused to pay for a hospital bed, explaining that in order to cover this expense, she needs to be on Medicare. Heather does not qualify, since she is only 56. She also needs to have a ramp built, since she now requires a walker to do errands. Insurance will also not cover this expense. Not only can’t Heather and her husband afford this equipment, but their copays, deductibles and travel costs are exceeding their ability to pay. This should not happen in America!
How You Can Help
Mark works long hours to provide for his family and care for his wife, whom he loves deeply, but it’s no longer possible to meet Heather’s health care needs. If you can make a contribution, even a small one, thank you and God bless you! And will you kindly share this post?
