Raising Funds for Black Queer Archival Project 'In The Life 2.0'

This project will consist of two parts: an oral history project and an upcoming podcast.

In the Life 2.0 centers the stories of Black queer folk. The upcoming podcast will be bi-weekly starting this fall to share the rich life and times of Black trans, non-binary and queer people from all works of life.

Everybody needs a witness and archiving these stories of love, loss, heartbreak, setbacks, triumphs and redemption ensures that our stories are first not lost to time, and secondly and more importantly, narratively controlled by us.

I am raising money to fund the costs associated with producing the podcast, transcribing interviews and purchasing art supplies.

Cost breakdown:
• Computer
• Camera
• Scanner
• Recording equipment
• Website costs
• Oral history transcription costs
• Art supplies

This project is vital because everybody needs a witness! Everyone deserves to be seen.

Sharing the experiences of Black queer people, elders and youngin’s can empower everyone and offer those who might feel isolated, a chance to be seen. Podcasts allow for the immediacy and accessibility of these unique stories. Archiving these oral histories ensures that these stories aren’t lost.

Who is Christopher Stahling?

I am a witness. I am a visual artist, a life coach, a chef, a Harlemite, a lover of all things black and gay AF. I come from a legacy of community workers who protect, share and highlight Black queer life. My background working as a volunteer and an employee of the Schomburg directs me to use skills that I have acquired over the years to continue the archiving Black folk. My mental health background forces me to always question and want to learn from other people’s stories. I want to do my part in contributing to that advocacy and continue the conversation by promoting their stories. If  in this life, we don’t bear witness to each other’s light, then who will?

In addition to fundraising, I also want to create an opportunity for non-monetary contributions to this important project. I am seeking volunteers to share their stories.
