Help us fundraise for The Rewild Project- An epic journey through some of NZ most remote spaces!

What is The Rewild Project?

"The taming of 3 wild Kaimanawa horses and the rewilding of their human companions over an epic 3000km Journey, traversing some of New Zealand’s most remote and awe-inspiring landscapes."

In October 2019, we will be traversing the length of New Zealand on horseback, accompanied and guided by our team of recently-tamed, wild Kaimanawa horses. Starting at the Bluff, we will ride through the remote backcountry of  both islands to conclude our journey in Cape Reinga, taking an estimated eight months to complete. We will be self reliant, carrying all of our gear and provisions with us on pack horses as we complete this unsupported journey through some of New Zealand’s most remote and stunning landscapes.

Our Mission(s):

-To help share and protect the wild spaces of NZ

-To inspire others to have a lifestyle rewilding journey of their own, while connecting with themselves and others, through nature.

-To place small business on the map and connect communities nationwide

-To advocate for the Kaimanawa,  the "wild" horse of NZ

Why should you support The Rewild Project?

By supporting our mission, you are helping us advocate for a lifestyle where people live in harmony, not in competition with, the natural world. In modern day living, our lives are often dictated and dominated by a multitude of screens, that not only distance and disconnect us from one another, but also from the beautiful planet that we reside on. This ride is dedicated to inspiring and educating people globally on how to seek out their own outdoor experiences and reconnect with nature in their daily lives.

In conjunction with our journey, we are also developing our www.humanandhorse.co.nz platform to help horse owners in New Zealand connect with the knowledge, tools and services to help foster their relationship with their horse. We will be using our journey to document horse-friendly trails / routes throughout the country and will provide accessible information to riders looking to get out and explore.

The Horses: Why Kaimanawas?

The Kaimanawa is the “wild” horse of New Zealand. These horses grow, thrive and ultimately survive on the rugged terrain of the Kaimanawa ranges of the North Island. The variable and often harsh conditions of the ranges lend extreme adaptability and durability to the horses, allowing them to flourish in varying environments and disciplines. To maintain the delicate balance of the ecology on the land they call home, there is an annual muster which keeps their population at a level that is sustainable for both the land and animals. As a result, hundreds of horses are in need of homes each year and any that are not rehomed are sadly, send to slaughter. These horses deserve to have their story told and to be given a chance at a new life after being mustered in. We have decided to use them for our journey not only because they are strong, sturdy, and good natured animals, but also to help tell their story and showcase them as a versatile and viable riding and companion horse as we explore the connections between human and horse.

Where will your Donations Go?

This ride and the ethos it carries has been our forever dream and has been in its planning stages for many years. As a couple, we have invested our life savings into making it come to fruition, however, a journey such as this has a huge amount of cost to cover. With many moving parts, ongoing expenses for both horse and human and many unexpected hurdles to overcome, we cannot do it alone! Before the ride can even begin, we must invest in core basic essentials such as pack saddles, riding saddles, provisions, safety gear, transport to our start destination and more. Once the ride has begun, there will be additional recurring costs including: provisions, emergency medical funds, hoofcare and more. Any donation is much appreciated!
