Some doors only open one way.

We're the organizers behind Trapdoor, a fund that helps queer and trans people relocate away from hostile living situations before things get worse. It runs on a network that already exists; city chapters, Houdini Collective contacts, people who know people. We ran a quiet version of this in summer 2025, and it worked. Now we're building it to hold more weight, for more people, while keeping the people we help safe from further exposure.

We already did this once.

In summer of 2025, we helped people relocate with nothing more than a phone number and someone willing to say "crash on my couch." That offer got people out; donations covered bus tickets and we were able to keep a small reserve on hand so the network didn't run dry. It was never about raising a lot. It was about making sure the connection existed before someone needed it.

Word spread on its own. A second person reached out after hearing about the first. A third case is active right now. That's why this needs to be sturdier than one phone and one couch - and honestly, that's what keeps us motivated to get this right.

This works because it's a network of people who already trust each other. Trapdoor exists to make that trust repeatable and safer for everyone who passes through it.

One fund, managed transparently.

We used to raise money case by case using our own banks, naming a city or shelter specific enough that people would feel more compelled to donate. That also made the person we were helping findable by exactly who they were trying to get away from. It worked once, but it wasn't safe to repeat.

Now we've dedicated one pooled account. Our treasurer tracks every case and disburses funds directly for verified, specific needs - bus fare, a housing deposit, a short-term stay - as they come up. We don't publish the names or locations of the people we help, to protect their privacy, but every dollar is accounted for internally and we keep records we're glad to explain if asked. Give $5 a month or $50 once; it goes toward the next documented, real need.

We're using GoFundMe for this, same as before, just structured for more people. It's reliable, it's a platform people already trust, and it's easy to point someone to.
