Some doors only open one way.

Trapdoor moves queer and trans people out of hostile situations before those situations get worse. It runs on a network that already exists: socio-political chapters in different cities, Houdini Collective contacts, and people who already know somebody who knows somebody. We ran a version of this quietly in the summer of 2025 and it worked. This is us building it into something that can carry more weight, for more people, without ever turning anyone's crisis into public content.

We already did this once.

In the summer of 2025, we moved people out of unsafe living situations using nothing more sophisticated than a phone number and somebody willing to say "crash on my couch for a few weeks." That offer, more than any amount of money, is what actually got people out. Fundraising covered bus tickets and kept a small reserve on hand so the network didn't run dry the moment it got tested. It was never about raising a large sum. It was about making sure the connection already existed before somebody needed it, so a shortage of a few hundred dollars never got to be the reason somebody stayed somewhere dangerous.

Word got around on its own. A second person reached out because they had heard what happened with the first, and we routed them through the same network without needing to raise a dollar. As of this writing, a third case is active. That's not a hypothetical scenario we're describing for effect. It's happening right now, which is exactly why the network needs to be sturdier than one person's phone and one person's couch.

That's the part worth sitting with. This works because it's a network of people who already trust each other, not a program somebody designed on a whiteboard. Trapdoor exists to make that network sturdier, more repeatable, and safer for everyone who has to pass through it.

One fund. No names attached.

We used to raise money person by person, which meant naming a city, a shelter, a situation specific enough that people would actually give. It also made that person findable by exactly the people they were trying to get away from. In 2025 that model worked once, but it wasn't repeatable and it wasn't safe to keep doing.

The fund works differently now. One pooled, recurring account, spent as real cases come in, replenished continuously, tied to no single name or city. Give five dollars a month or fifty once. It goes into the same account that pays for the next bus ticket, the next deposit, the next person who needed somewhere else to be.

We're using GoFundMe for this, same as before, just structured differently. It's reliable, it's a platform people already trust, and it's easy to point somebody to. The difference is the money sits in a treasurer-controlled movement fund, not a page built around one person's name, and it only gets touched when an actual case needs it.
