Hershel noticed stiffness in his neck and felt a lump in May of 2020. He quickly got it checked out, and it was diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma of a salivary gland with metastasis to a lymph node in his neck. He was not keen on the traditional way cancer is treated in the USA after watching others suffer and die with traditional treatment, including a young family member one year earlier.
His first step to getting help was an out of pocket, 3 weeks stay in Tijuana, Mexico at Hope4Cancer, where many alternative things were done to help strengthen his body, immune system, and ability to detox. He and his wife Karen learned about IPT, insulin potentiated chemotherapy, which was given to others at Hope4Cancer. IPT was developed in Mexico in the 1930s by Dr. Donato Perez Garcia. Cancer cells love glucose and have 15 times more glucose receptors than non-cancerous cells. They run on glucose, while regular cells can either run on glucose or fat. With IPT, the blood sugar is lowered to 55 with insulin, and then a cocktail of 2-7 different chemos at 10% of their normal strength is given. These chemos are laced with glucose. The hungry for sugar cancer cells suck up the majority of this weak chemo.
Hershel was not offered IPT while at Hope4Cancer, being told that his cancer type did not respond well to chemo. He came home from Tijuana and continued many alternative types of treatment at home. He noticed that his tumor started to grow in October and felt he needed to do more. Indiana cancer doctors had recommended some radical treatments, including surgery, which would weaken his right arm and possibly affect his speech and swallowing. Some recommended full strength chemo, which he was leery of. One of the patients we met at Hope4Cancer went to Euromed Foundation Center in Phoenix after leaving Tijuana. She had been incredibly sick while at Hope4Cancer and had a poor prognosis. He learned in October that Euromed had turned her situation around and that she was doing very well. He made a call to Euromed and spoke with Dr. Dean, who told him that yes, his type of cancer was treatable with IPT and that they had success with it with other patients. Hershel and Karen watched video testimonials of others who had gotten help at Euromed, and they spoke to another patient on the phone about the great success that he had gotten with his stage 4 lung and bone cancer. They decided to get treatment there and made the 25-hour drive to Phoenix in early November.
Euromed uses IPT to kill cancer and also uses alternative treatments to strengthen the body and immune system. IPT is not covered by Medicare, even though it uses the traditional chemo drugs. The treatment is expensive, with a baseline of $6000 per week plus the cost of living expenses. Expected treatment is 8 weeks long, along with other occasional trips back to Phoenix to keep the cancer at bay.
Hershel has always been one to help people over the course of his life generously. It would mean the world to him if others would heed the call to help him through his most dire situation.
