Declan Henry is a 2 yr old, full of life, loving, happy, big brother. In May of this year, his parents noticed that his lymph nodes were all of the sudden huge. At first, the pediatrician said he looked wonderful; a healthy boy and not to worry... come back in a week if they aren’t better. They thought he was just fighting a virus, but strangely he had no signs of infection.
A week later the lymph nodes weren’t smaller; they were bigger. Declan then got referred to a pediatric hematologist who jumped right on the concerning nodes and sent Declan for bloodwork and scans. The findings were concerning...
His parents and family hoped so badly that the doctors would be wrong... that they could go home and never come back... that they could enjoy their summer vacation and Declan could be a little boy and not worry about being sick. As a parent, all you want is for your kids to be healthy and happy so this is a hard pill to swallow.
Declan was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He has already had to stay in the hospital several days for testing, biopsies, and starting medication. He is currently undergoing outpatient chemo 1-2 times per week through his port. "He’s already been so strong and barely cries. He takes his medicine with zero hesitation and calls his IV his “Tubey”... I seriously don’t know how he’s so tough... I know I wouldn’t be so brave" his mother Sarah said. "I do know one thing... I’m so lucky to be his Mom and we’re gonna kick CANCER right in the butt."
As you know, all of these hospital visits and medications start to add up financially and is something no one ever plans for or thinks about until they are faced with this situation.
