Helping a Friend Become a Teacher

Five years ago I was teaching and living in Accra, the capital city of Ghana. I fell in love with the place, and met so many fascinating, kind, and helpful people.

One of the kindest people I met was a man by the name of Dauda.  We met on a bus while I was spending a weekend traveling through his hometown. He volunteered his time to take me on a tour of his village. He introduced me to some members of his family, and showed me some really cool, off-the-beaten-path places. What was especially neat to see, though, was the school where he spent a lot of his time volunteering. He loved working to help kids grow, he explained, and he was fascinated by all of the stories I could share of my own experiences with students. 

The more time I spent with Dauda, the more frustrated I became with my own good fortune. Here was a passionate educator, a hard-working member of his family and community, who sometimes couldn't afford to eat for several days at a time. He regularly expressed to me his desire to go to school so he could increase his impact. I made a promise to myself that I would do my best to support this man in his endeavours. 

After years of study and scrounging for funds, Dauda wrote some exams and has been accepted to enter the Early Childhood Education program at the University of Education in Winneba, Ghana. He is thrilled about the opportunity, but is worried he won't be able to afford it. 

That's where you come in. I'm asking for help so I can help out my friend. His fees for school and lodging every year work out to about $1000 Canadian. For a full four years his degree will cost less than any ONE of the years of my undergrad.
