Help Us Get a Special Chair for Sol Catalina

Hello everyone,

I’d like to share the story of Sol Catalina, my cousin a beautiful 21 year old young woman whose smile shines despite the deeply painful situation she lives in. Catalina was born with spastic cerebral palsy, a condition that leaves her completely dependent on her mother, my aunt, who is her primary caregiver and a single mother.

Catalina comes from a very low-income background, and life has been a constant struggle for both her and her mum. She spends 24 hours a day in bed, every single day of the week. Years ago, it was a little easier to lift her and take her to her therapy appointments or outside to enjoy the fresh air. But now, at 21 years old, she’s 1.51 meters tall and weighs 37 kilos (81 lbs). My aunt, who is the same height, can no longer lift her without putting her own health at risk.

What’s even more heartbreaking is that due to spending so much time in bed, Catalina’s spine has started to become deformed. Her body is suffering from the lack of proper support, and the absence of a special chair has drastically limited her quality of life.

My aunt, Marina Álvarez, has carried an incredibly heavy burden for years. She has done everything in her power to care for her daughter lifting her in her arms, day after day, with unimaginable effort and love. And sometimes, as you can see in the photos, she has had no other choice but to place Catalina in a baby stroller just to move her around even though Catalina no longer fits in it. It’s painful to see. It’s not dignified. But it’s the only option she has had.

On top of everything, my aunt doesn’t work, because Catalina needs full-time care and cannot be left alone for a single moment. She is with her 24/7, giving her everything, but without the financial resources to give her what she truly needs.

Watching them breaks your heart. Because it’s unfair. No mother should have to fight so hard to give her child the most basic right: the ability to sit up, go outside, receive therapy, and live with dignity.

After much research, we found that buying a special chair from Australia and shipping it to Colombia is significantly more affordable than trying to buy one there, where the prices are nearly unreachable. We've already raised part of the funds, but we still need $3,500 AUD to cover the remaining cost of the chair and shipping.

So today, from the bottom of our hearts, we’re asking for your help. Maybe a small donation doesn’t seem like much to you… but for Catalina and my aunt, it could mean everything. Sometimes we don’t realise that even a small gesture like sharing this story or giving whatever we can, can completely change someone’s life.

Let’s help Catalina go outside again. Let’s give her mum a bit of relief, a bit of hope, and the support she so deeply deserves.

Hola a todos,

Quiero compartir con ustedes la historia de Sol Catalina, mi prima, una joven hermosa de 21 años cuya sonrisa brilla a pesar de la difícil y dolorosa situación en la que vive. Catalina nació con parálisis cerebral espástica, una condición que la mantiene completamente dependiente del cuidado de su mamá, mi tía, quien es su principal cuidadora y madre cabeza de familia.

Catalina proviene de una familia de muy bajos recursos, y la vida para ella y su mamá ha sido una lucha constante. Pasa las 24 horas del día en cama, todos los días de la semana. Hace algunos años, era un poco más fácil cargarla para llevarla a sus terapias o para que pudiera salir a tomar un poco de aire. Pero hoy, con 21 años, mide 1.51 metros y pesa 37 kilos, y mi tía, que mide lo mismo que ella, ya no puede levantarla sin poner en riesgo su propia salud.

Lo más triste de esta situación es que Catalina ha pasado tanto tiempo en cama que su columna ya ha comenzado a deformarse. Su cuerpo sufre por la falta de soporte adecuado, y la ausencia de una silla especial ha limitado enormemente su calidad de vida.

Mi tía, Marina Álvarez, ha llevado una carga inmensamente pesada durante años. Ha hecho todo lo posible por cuidar de su hija cargándola en sus brazos día tras día, con un esfuerzo y un amor indescriptibles. A veces, como pueden ver en las fotos, no ha tenido más opción que poner a Catalina en un coche de bebé para poder moverla, aunque ella ya no cabe allí. Es doloroso de ver. No es digno. Pero ha sido lo único que ha tenido a mano.

Además de todo esto, mi tía no trabaja, porque Catalina necesita atención de tiempo completo y no puede quedarse sola ni un solo momento. Está con ella las 24 horas, entregándole todo, pero sin los recursos económicos necesarios para brindarle lo que realmente necesita.

Verlas duele. Porque es injusto. Ninguna madre debería tener que luchar tanto para darle a su hija lo más básico: la posibilidad de sentarse, salir, recibir terapias y vivir con dignidad.

Después de investigar mucho, descubrimos que comprar una silla especial desde Australia y enviarla a Colombia resulta mucho más económico que intentar conseguir una allá, donde los precios son prácticamente inalcanzables. Ya hemos logrado reunir una parte del dinero, pero aún necesitamos $3,500 dólares australianos para cubrir el valor restante de la silla y el costo del envío.

Por eso, hoy les pedimos ayuda, con el corazón en la mano. Tal vez una pequeña donación no signifique mucho para ti… pero para Catalina y mi tía, podría significarlo todo. A veces no nos damos cuenta de que incluso un gesto pequeño como compartir esta historia o donar lo que puedas puede cambiar una vida por completo.

Ayudemos a que Catalina pueda volver a salir de casa. Ayudemos a que su mamá tenga un poco de alivio, un poco de esperanza, y el apoyo que tanto necesita.

A todas las personas en Australia o en cualquier parte del mundo que consideren donar, gracias por abrir su corazón a una familia que, aunque esté lejos, siente cada gesto de solidaridad muy cerca. Su generosidad puede marcar una diferencia real y duradera.
