Help us get a kidney for Adam
Don protégé
My name is Michelle Garcia. My husband Dave and I have a nephew that is very sick and he needs a kidney. I have taken care of Adam on and off since he was two months old. When his mother passed away, my sister, 10 years ago, I became his real only family left here and took on the role as “mom” ever since. Here is his story…..
In 2011 Adam was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease called Goodpasture’s Syndrome. This disease can affect the kidney or the lungs or both, and in turn, that can affect the heart. When he was first diagnosed, he had to spend a lot of time in the hospital in Missoula and once he was released, he started dialysis every other day, three days a week, for the last 13 years. He had to go through many treatments and driving back-and-forth to Missoula for the first year all while still receiving dialysis three times a week as Adam’s kidneys were completely non-functioning.
Adam has been life flighted numerous times to Missoula when his body stops functioning. In 2013 Adam had a heart attack and was dead for 45 minutes while the doctors continued to do CPR on him. They brought him back and he was life flighted again to Missoula. When the plane landed in Missoula, he had a second heart attack. At that time the nurses and doctors in Missoula called us and told us to come and say our goodbyes as he wasn’t going to make it through this. We gathered together all the family we could from Idaho and Montana, and we headed to Missoula to say our goodbyes. Adam, being one of the strongest people I know, pulled through and survived after spending over a month in the ICU. However, he was still on dialysis and has been fighting every day since. He has underwent numerous surgeries for various things and numerous procedures all just to keep him alive and functioning. Adam gets up every morning and he either goes to work or he goes to dialysis. That has been his life for 13 years. Most people are on dialysis for five years before they receive a kidney. Adams body has not been healthy enough to be put on the transplant list, or to receive a kidney to help him lead a normal life which he has never been able to do as an adult as he was only 20 years old when he was first diagnosed.
We have now met with a kidney transplant team from Salt Lake City Utah, and they want to give him a kidney!!! This, of course comes with quite the expense as you can imagine. So we are now reaching out to all of you to donate anything you can, even if it’s only five dollars to help us raise the amount of money we need to make this happen.
Adam had another setback a few days ago as we drove to Missoula for yet again another surgery that he had to have. He went into anaphylactic shock and had to receive some other medication‘s to pull him through that and get him through the treatment that he needed. He did pull through and we were able to drive back to Butte. On arrival in Butte, Adam got the phone call telling him that his stepdad, the only father he ever really knew, passed away. Adam has taken hit after hit and still, he gets up every single day and he goes to dialysis or he goes to work. He said the thing he is most looking forward to in getting a kidney is being able to work full-time. Please help us make this happen.
Once a kidney becomes available for Adam and a match is found, we will have to relocate to Salt Lake City for 4 to 6 weeks. That is just one of the expenses that we will have to undertake. We are asking for your help. If you can’t donate, please send a prayer!! Thank you all for taking the time to read this.
