Just a few days after Christmas in 2024, Liam’s world changed forever. At only 8 months old, he lost his birth mother to sudden heart complications. She was just 30 years old. In the middle of unimaginable grief, his grandmother—my mother-in-law—selflessly stepped in to care for him, wrapping him in love during such a heartbreaking time.

But only weeks later, at the end of January, we were devastated again when she unexpectedly passed away too. In the span of a single month, Liam lost the two people who loved him most. He was left in a home that simply wasn’t safe or suitable for a baby.

At that time, I was nearly 9 months pregnant. Despite the exhaustion and uncertainty, we knew without hesitation that Liam belonged with us. We brought my husband’s sweet nephew into our home and into our hearts. Just a few weeks later, we welcomed our first biological son. Overnight, we became parents to two baby boys just 10 months apart.

Fast forward to 2026, and our home is full in the most beautiful way. We now have three boys under three. Our days are long, loud, and busy—but they are filled with laughter, love, and a bond between brothers that is nothing short of incredible. Liam has been our eldest son since he was 9 months old, and now we are preparing to celebrate his third birthday. Watching him grow, heal, and thrive has been one of the greatest blessings of our lives.

The journey to make this official has not been easy. We are now on our second attorney—one who helped remove Liam from an unsafe situation, and another guiding us through the adoption process. We are heading into court dates three out of five and are finally nearing the finish line. Soon, we hope to legally secure what has already been true in our hearts: that Liam is our son, forever.

Adoption was not something we planned—but it has become one of the greatest gifts our family has ever received. Along with that blessing, however, have come significant and unexpected legal expenses that have added up quickly.
