On March 11, 2018 Alisha Gelder's husband Austin Gelder went on a bike ride, a usual weekend activity for him. During a pit-stop at a near-by gas station for a cold drink, he called his wife (an RN at a local hospital) saying he wasn't feeling too well. Alisha suggested he come to her work's emergency room to get checked out as she was working that day, a Good Samaritan Dawn Jones drove him. En route to the emergency room, Austin went into cardiac arrest and lost consciousness. Dawn was quick to get Canton Police on scene, get Austin out of the passenger seat, and begin CPR.
An emergent cardiac catheterization was performed once it was found that Austin had a very severe heart attack, also known as a widow-maker. Somehow, by the grace of God and placing these numerous angels in Austin's path he was able to survive.
Alisha spent about 4 weeks in the ICU by Austin's side. Austin was intubated, sedated, and had a number of IV medications to help him continue to survive his traumatic heart attack. He also developed pneumonia as a result of the tube, which was helping him to breathe. Austin eventually had a tracheostomy performed in order for him to continue to wean off of the ventilator. While his cardiac and respiratory functioning continued to improve, it was unclear how much neurological function he would regain.
About a month of his stay in the ICU, Austin was moved to a long-term acute care facility. He continued to do well in the calmer setting, and eventually didn't even need the ventilator anymore. As a result of a stent being placed in Austin's heart an MRI to assess brain function was unable to be done until very recently.
Alisha learned that Austin had very little brain activity and the best course of action would be to place him in hospice care.
Alisha and Austin have 2 boys in high school with dreams of attending college. As a collective unit, the 4East/West staff want to help relieve Alisha of some of the financial burden this tragedy has incurred in order to help her and her boys to focus on spending time with Austin during this difficult time.
