Help the "Boy in the Bubble " Fight Cancer
My nephew Robert (my twin sisters only child) was born with SCID (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency). A rare disease commonly referred to as the "Boy in the Bubble Syndrome". He was initially treated at Duke University in North Carolina (far from his home in Oklahoma) receiving 3 bone marrow transplants before the age of 4. All of them only partially successful without a cure.
Robert has lived a somewhat secluded life with numerous hospital admissions throughout his life and requires many medicines and treatments to include home oxygen and also potentially needing a double lung transplant among many other medical issues. He was not expected to live past 2 years of age but we have been blessed that he has made it to his 25th birthday.
The night before his 25th birthday in June he received a call from Duke that his immune system was back at pre-transplant levels and would require yet another bone marrow transplant. But before that process was set in place Robert was admitted for pneumonia at home in Oklahoma. The C-T scan showed he had a small cell carcinoma (tumor) which is an aggressive form of cancer between his esophagus and trachea.
The decision was made by his excellent team of Oklahoma doctors that he would benefit from treatment at Duke Hospital in North Carolina where his primary immunologist practices and has followed his medical treatment since a baby.
All this to say Robert, who essentially requires 24 hour care and has now for several years, and his mother have been in North Carolina now for several weeks. The best help they need right now is financial. They have had to rent an apartment and Tamie has not been able to work for the last year due to Covid (she is a nurse) can not risk exposure to Robert.
Robert has already been in the hospital twice as he developed a large kidney stone and had a stent placement in his ureter. He is currently in the hospital due to a blood clot in his arm and lung. He has finished his first round of chemotherapy which in now of hold due to the blood clot. But continues radiation treatment twice a day.
The length of stay from home and treatment is indefinite at this time which is financially straining being away from home and medical expenses piling up.
I am asking for any amount financially no matter how large or small if possible. Prayers are needed and sharing this link would be greatly appreciated.
Although Robert has had many set backs in his life he continues to maintain a healthy outlook on life. He is an amazing, smart, witty, sweet human loved by many.
The help you can provide will help relieve any additional stress on Robert and his family during this trying and difficult time. WE APPRECIATE YOU!
I will continue to update you on Robert's status, progress and treatment as I get updates.
Thank you.
