Hello, friends!
It has been a joy over the last three years to build a place for bookish conversation and community in our small but mighty space, and we are so grateful for all your support. As we step into our fourth year, we find ourselves facing new challenges that make it harder to do all the things you’ve come to expect from us.
This year has gotten off to a slower than usual start. The seemingly endless rainy days kept visitors away; inflation and economic uncertainty has introduced new hurdles — higher costs, slower deliveries, and unexpected fees.
Running an indie bookstore is no small feat, and we, like other small businesses, operate on razor thin margins. Add in vendors understandably raising their prices or adding additional fees to orders to offset tariffs, and well, it’s been challenging to keep our head above water.
We’ve always been stubborn, and asking for assistance is not easy for us. After long discussions about our next steps and encouragement from dear friends of the store, we’ve decided to reach out to you for help.
We’d rather answer to you — the community that loves and uses this space — than to an outside lender. We’re hoping that you’ll help us keep our doors open and help our space thrive and grow.
Your contribution will help us:
- Expand our collection, especially with more books from Maine authors.
- Host book signings, literary events, and reading programs.
- Make needed repairs and improvements to our store — including improving accessibility to the shop.
- Add more staff, allowing us to expand our hours — we’d love to open seven days a week and start earlier during the warmer months.
- Sustain daily operations to ensure the store remains a welcoming space for the community.
How You Can Help
Make a financial contribution. Every contribution makes a meaningful difference. We know this is a time of economic uncertainty for all of us and some may not have the means to contribute financially. That’s okay. There are other ways to help.
Share our campaign with friends, family and fellow book lovers. Share our social media posts or leave a Google review.
Attend our events. We have a number of fun events slated for June and July and would love to see you there.
If we don’t reach our entire goal, we’ll continue to explore secondary options, but please know that all funding received will go to sustaining the store.
We deeply appreciate your support — it means the world to us.
Thanks so much,
Michelle & Rick
