Hello everyone, our darling Sally has recently been diagnosed with Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA).
Sally usually wags her tail at everything and never turns down a treat. However, on Thursday morning, her tail was down and nothing would cheer her up, not even a treat which she turned her nose up at. We decided we would just keep an eye on her. I had to go to work from 2-6pm and right before I was about to leave she vomited 3 times. I thought maybe now she’s vomited she will feel a bit better. I let her rest inside until I got home at 630pm.
When I arrived home, I noticed that she had bad diarrhoea and there were more vomits around the house of just clear liquid. I took her straight to the 24 hour vet at 7pm on Thursday. The vet said by the sounds of things she could just have a case of gastro, however, the vet recommended she got some extra tests done as by this point she couldn’t even walk.
The tests came back that Sally had underlying DKA and the gastro symptoms were what pushed her over the edge and sent her little body into shock. All of Sally’s levels, fluids and electrolytes were out of whack and her sugar levels were at 23 when they should be between 3-7 MAX. They have since been slowing declining after being hooked up the fluids and insulin (got down to 10). However, as of yesterday (Saturday), they have been on the rise again (back up to 13.7).
We thought we were heading in the right direction, but now we are just hitting problem after problem. Due to the mass amounts of medication, Sally now has a UTI as well, which is causing her to go back downhill. The vet has also noted that her liver is quite inflamed and she could possibly have Pancreatitis.
Her little body is working overtime and we just want to bring our baby home, but we can’t until she decides to eat on her own. It is now Sunday and Sally has not eaten since Wednesday night. We are starting to get worried as no matter the treatment, if she does not eat, she will not survive.
Winnie, who is Sally’s little sister (pictured) has been coming along to our twice daily visits as she is missing her so much. I hoped that by taking Winnie for visits would perk Sally up. Sally has loved getting kisses from her sissy, but Winnie can not cope being home without her sister anymore.
Our bill is currently over $4000aud and Sally will not be discharged anytime soon. Each night at the vet is an additional $800-$1200aud in hospital & nursing fees. This is excluding her bloods every 2 hours, regular vet checks, anti-nausea and appetite stimulant injections, constant insulin and fluid drips, ongoing glucose tests, pain medication and all the rest.
If Sally does decide to eat & start progressing again, she will need insulin injections twice daily and a specialised diet - we are hoping we can get to this point. My family is dedicated to following all at home treatment plans when we reach that step.
Due to these extensive, ongoing costs, I have decided to create a Go Fund Me fundraiser in the hopes of raising some money for Sally’s treatment and hospital bills. This is not something I would have ever thought I would be doing, but we just want our baby to be healthy, happy & back in our arms at home again.
My family have helped me with covering the huge medical costs so far & I’d be so grateful for any amount you could donate & have hope that this will contribute to saving our baby.
