Today I knocked on a woman named Q’s door and asked if she had any food she could spare.

Without even thinking twice, she went inside and brought me taco shells and meat.

What I didn’t know at the time was that she had just given me all the food they had left.

That was supposed to be her family’s dinner. It was the only food Q and her children had, and yet when a complete stranger showed up at her door asking for something to eat, she gave it away.

Then she apologized because she couldn’t give me any water.

I later found out why: their water had been shut off.

Q explained that things had gotten so difficult without running water that they were having to use cups just to go to the bathroom.

I gave Q $500 to thank her for her incredible kindness, and she broke down crying.

That’s when I learned just how difficult things had become.

Q is a single mom who just got evicted and has to move out today, and she told me she was planning to go to a shelter to apply and see if they had a room available for her family. She didn’t know where they were going to sleep or what was going to happen next.

I couldn’t believe it.

Here was a mom wondering where her family was going to live, without running water and with barely any food — and when someone she had never met knocked on her door hungry, she gave him her family’s last meal.

She could have said no.

Instead, she chose kindness.

Now I think it’s our turn to show Q that same kindness.

Let’s come together and help this family avoid homelessness, get their basic necessities taken care of, and give them a safe and stable place to call home.
