To Our New Hanover Township Neighbors, Fire Company Members, and Friends:
Many in our community may already be aware that on December 3, 2025, an order was entered involving Sassamansville Fire Company No. 1 following proceedings with the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office. The Order will result in the dissolution and permanent closure of the Sassamansville Fire Company as a nonprofit organization, charity, and fire company if the Order is not overturned on appeal.
This possibility is deeply troubling to many residents who value the long history and contributions of Sassamansville Fire Company. Without meaningful support, a community institution that has served generations risks being lost.
For decades, Sassamansville Fire Company has quietly supported the community in countless ways. Among other things, it has provided indoor space for a regional youth athletic organization during winter months, assisted residents with water during drought conditions, hosted and supported fundraising efforts for charitable organizations (including other fire companies), offered a free Fourth of July fireworks celebration for the community, and shared equipment and vehicles with neighboring fire companies to assist with training. These are only a few examples of its long-standing commitment to service.
Concerned community members are now asking for help to ensure that Sassamansville Fire Company has the opportunity to pursue an appeal to prevent Sassamansville Fire Company from being closed forever. As I am sure you can understand, there is a significant legal expense associated with the appeal process. Time is critical.
All funds raised will be paid directly to the law firm handling the appeal. Sassamansville Fire Company will not receive or manage any of the funds. At the conclusion of the matter, if there are any remaining funds, these funds will be donated by the law firm to another fire company, who will be determined at that time.
This is about preserving a piece of our community's history and giving it a fair chance to continue serving others.
If you are aware, if you care, and if you are able to help, your support would be sincerely appreciated.
