How we met Luffy
We first met our dog Luffy at one of Petco‘s local rescue event. He was only 8 weeks old and it was love at first sight. The staff from the rescue group told us that Luffy was found in a carton box outside of a shopping center. After I saw this little guy’s eye, I knew he will be one of our beloved family members. My boyfriend and I decided to adopt him immediately. However, after 4 days, we discovered that Luffy got Parvo. I know how dangerous Parvo would mean to an 8 weeks old puppy so we went to the animal hospital immediately. Fortunately, the little one didn’t give up and after seven long days in the hospital, he came though and survived. After taking Luffy back home, the two of us decided then and there that we will try our best to give Luffy a happy and wonderful life.
Abnormal Esophagus
Soon Luffy grew up and settled down with us. However, one day I noticed that he choked after drinking water or eating wet dog food (He seems fine with dry food). We took Luffy to the local Veterinarian Specialty Center, the vet there told me Luffy was born with abnormal esophagus, he will be afflicted with swallowing difficulty as long as he lives. This abnormal esophagus condition may cause food or water to go into his lung and developed aspiration pneumonia. We learned that an esophagus restructuring surgery will help Luffy avoid that fate. Since Luffy suffered so much in the past, we really hope he can eat well and have a healthy and happy life. We decided to go ahead with this surgery. At first, the surgery seems successful, Luffy can eat and drink well. However, after two-month Luffy had a big setback and begin to choke again after drinking and eating. At this time, the vet mentioned this may be cause by the related scar tissues and recommend for him to undertake another surgery.

The Second Surgery
Unfortunately, after the second surgery, Luffy got a very severe complication—Heavy aspiration pneumonia. Luffy was on the Ventilator for 3 days. When Luffy was ready to get off the ventilator, his heart stopped beating and he stopped breathing. This really scared us. Fortunately, the hospital tried CPR and Luffy was resuscitated! I am so grateful and happy to see Luffy well again. After another 4 days in the oxygen cage, Luffy finally came back home but with a large medical bill of $15,846. Now we must feed Luffy expansive frozen raw food to avoid further problem.
Even before the surgery, to cure the parvo, we paid about 6700 dollars, for the additional surgery we paid about 4500 dollars. Besides that, several rounds of vet cares also costed us about 2000 dollars. All these bills not only maxed out our insurance limit, but also consumed all our savings.
However, that’s not even accounting for the latest bill for the aspiration pneumonia treatment we just got. We could not afford such a large medical bill under this circumstance, and we could not afford to lose Luffy either! Please help us. We are trying to raise $15,846 for the medical bill. Please help us save Luffy! Please help us through any contributions, big or small or messages of encouragement!
Thank you for your support, prayers, and generosity.
