Ten local Norman creatives and young professionals are joining together to buy and sustain the downtown Norman music venue, OPOLIS, as a worker-owned cooperative entity. Andy and Marian Nuñez have operated OPOLIS together since they opened the doors to the micro venue and vegan restaurant in 2002. Twenty years later, the establishment has maintained its status as a cult favorite for drinks, vegan snacks, bands on the rise, movie and trivia nights, karaoke, secret shows by well known artists, and many other unique events. The ten individuals cooperatively buying the OPOLIS are Sarah Reid, M. Bailey Stephenson, Samantha Crain, Eli Wimmer, Laine Bergeron, Felina Rivera, Sasha Welsh, Addy Uhack, Michael Stafford, and Ethan Williams.
OPOLIS will stay open with the vision and vibe pretty much intact. There will still be bands, food, drinks, and a variety of events.
“We are overjoyed that a group of some of our favorite local musicians and people will be taking ownership of OPOLIS,” say Marian and Andy Nuñez. They add, “We’ve watched downtown Norman blossom, we’ve watched local and national bands go from playing in front of small crowds at OPOLIS to playing arenas, we’ve watched our own child grow up and move on, and so, now, it’s time for us to move on.”
