As you all know, Puerto Rico was hit by two massive hurricanes this season, causing devastation across the island, impacting over 3 million Americans. For us, this hit very close to home… my Uncle Tim, his wife Luz, and their two boys, Patrick and Bernard, are among those families struggling to recover after these horrific storms. No one was injured, luckily, however, Tim’s business (15 employees!), which relies almost completely on tourism, has been completely shut down.
Every day is a struggle. They’re guarding their house from looters with a machete and their dogs! They have to wait for hours to get gas to power their generator (they’re now on their third used generator as it is impossible to find a new one!) for an hour or two a day… just enough to keep the food from spoiling. Now I understand that they have had to abandon that after searching for days and standing in multiple lines for hours each to find a simple valve spring retainer to keep it running. Any communications the family has is by driving to San Juan and hoping that they can get enough signal to get some text messages out.
Puerto Rico is going to be recovering for a long time, and Uncle Tim’s family will be right there in the middle of it all, struggling with trying to get back to “normal”. No one knows yet, for example, when the children will be able to go back to school!
We’re trying to raise money to help Tim and his family through these extreme times. Every little bit will help, so please give what you can!
