On January 23, 2026, we rescued Marty—a stray spotted wandering a rural county in Kentucky. Local residents had reported seeing him in recent days and were deeply concerned about a visible, open wound. When Marty arrived at GRRAND, his condition was grave.

Marty is a young-to-middle-aged male golden mix who was suffering from a large, fist-sized open wound on his left side. Though lethargic, he remained conscious during transport and was taken immediately to the veterinarian. He was started on IV fluids, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications, pain management, and underwent initial wound care.

Further examination revealed shrapnel embedded in his wound. X-rays confirmed that Marty had been shot. The bullet entered through his rear and exited through his back, leaving behind a large, infected hole. Marty has been hospitalized for about a week now and continues to receive daily, intensive treatment. He is still very sick and extremely fragile.

On January 28, Marty ate his first meal—an encouraging sign that gave us a bit of hope. Veterinary staff even brought him out into the workroom, where he soaked up gentle attention and responded with soft tail wags. Despite these small victories, Marty has a long road ahead. He needs improved nutrition and continued medical care to support proper healing.

At this time, we don’t yet know the full cost of Marty’s veterinary care, but we know it will be significant. No matter the expense, we are committed to giving him everything he needs to heal.

Marty has already endured more pain than any dog should, but today he is safe and surrounded by care. His recovery will take time, patience, and continued medical support. Every contribution helps us provide the treatment he needs and move him one step closer to healing. If donating isn’t possible right now, sharing Marty’s story is another meaningful way to help.
