On August 10, 2026, our lives changed forever. Earlier that evening, I had the blessing of hearing all of my children laughing together under one roof. A short time later, my oldest daughter, Leylani, and her best friend went to a nearby gas station because she thought she might be having an allergic reaction and wanted a Gatorade. As they were turning left onto our street on the way home, another car crashed into the passenger side of the vehicle, exactly where Leylani was sitting. The impact was devastating. Leylani was airlifted to a hospital in Boston with extensive injuries from head to toe. In just one week, she has already undergone five surgeries, with more still ahead, and she remains on a ventilator fighting for her life.

Her doctors have told us it may take six months or more before we understand what her recovery will truly look like. Right now, I need to be by my baby’s side to hold her hand, speak to her, pray over her, and give her every bit of strength I can. At the same time, I have four other children at home, including a minor and one in college, and I do not have access to many of the benefits or protections traditional employees may receive during a crisis like this.
