We have created this page in hopes of gaining some support for our sweet girl, Lexi. Over the past weekend, Lexi began experiencing progressive neurological symptoms that we initially believed were related to a prior lumbar spine issue. She was seen by her primary care veterinarian on Friday and we left with a plan, but as the weekend progressed, it became clear something wasn’t right, and we rushed her to the emergency hospital.

After a neurology consultation, MRI, and a full day of monitoring, Lexi was diagnosed with meningoencephalitis — an inflammation of the brain and surrounding tissues. Due to her history of protein losing enteropathy, Lexi is already immunocompromised, making her more vulnerable to environmental infections. Infectious disease bloodwork has been sent out to determine the exact cause, but in the meantime she has started high dose steroids and antibiotics in hopes of controlling the inflammation and preventing further damage.

Lexi is back home now. She is still experiencing motor deficits, but she remains cognitively alert, in good spirits, and happy to be home. She is a strong, resilient girl who has already overcome so much, and we are hopeful as she continues treatment.

Unfortunately, the cost of emergency care, advanced imaging, specialty consultations, medications, and the ongoing follow ups have added up quickly. While recently enrolled pet insurance will help cover some costs, it won’t come close to covering all of her medical expenses.
