I’m a mommy of two adorable toddlers. When I found a small lump in my breast, I figured it was related to breastfeeding. Regular mammograms are not conducted on breastfeeding mothers, and I had been pregnant or breastfeeding for four years straight! My doctor referred me for a diagnostic ultrasound, which showed two black spots about a centimeter in diameter, and a black streak in my lymph nodes. I had a biopsy done a few days later and was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 8th, 2021.
A year ago in January, I was making funeral arrangements for my dear husband, who died of a sudden heart attack The first thought to cross my mind was fear of leaving my babies orphans, but I’m hoping I’m in the lucky 85% who survive this terrible disease. My babies are very attached to their mommy and can hardly bear for me to leave the room, and it is terrifying to imagine they might lose me.
Breast cancer is fatal in 100% of cases if left untreated, so I’m putting my faith in the hands of the doctors and nurses at Cedars Sinai to save my life. Biopsy results show that my cancer is HER2 positive, an aggressive type of cancer that responds well to immunotherapy drugs that teach your immune system to recognize and attack the cancer cells. I’ll be starting my treatment with chemotherapy and immunotherapy combined, then will have surgery sometime down the road.
My insurance is OK, but I will definitely be reaching my $8200 out of pocket max right away. I want to thank friends and family who have offered to help drive me to appointments, babysit, and stay with me while I’m ill from chemo. I’ll be needing a lot of help this year as I undergo treatment and manage two unruly toddlers.
