Hero has been by my side for 13 years as my service animal and loyal companion. She’s a Staffordshire terrier—small, with markings like a little cow and a personality that lights up every room. Hero has always known when I was about to black out from my neurocardiogenic syncope, which I developed from A-Fib. She once saved my life by keeping me away from the stairs when I lost consciousness, making sure I fell safely instead of down the steps.
Hero’s courage and intuition have touched many lives. She once rushed into the cold waters of Lake Superior to save two children who had fallen off their floaty, bringing them safely to shore when no one else noticed they were in trouble. She’s also helped my family—she lets my grandkids dress her up and has always been gentle and loving with them. One winter, she even led me to a friend who had overdosed and collapsed outside, helping us get her the help she needed just in time.
Now, Hero is facing her own battle. She has tumors in her lungs and on her body, and it’s become hard for her to walk, breathe, or enjoy the things she once loved. She’s declining quickly, and I can see she’s suffering. I want to give her the peaceful goodbye she deserves, surrounded by love and comfort, instead of letting her endure more pain. The funds raised will go toward her veterinary bill so I can be with her and make sure her final moments are gentle and dignified. I wasn’t expecting her to go this fast, and any support would mean the world to both of us. Thank you for helping me give Hero the gentle goodbye she deserves.
