Help Hasani Tell His Story

Hasani Jennings has served 29 years in Alabama’s prison system for a crime he committed as a teenager. Hasani is an accomplished scholar, artist and writer who is loved and respected by everyone he knows both inside and outside prison. He has spent his incarceration improving himself and the prison community by taking and teaching classes, tutoring men in literacy, participating in every rehabilitative opportunity that comes his way and advocating for a non-violent, educational environment inside prison. 
 
There is strong evidence that Hasani suffered mental harm when he was taken from his mother and placed in foster care. His childhood was marked by tremendous upheaval and undiagnosed depression that ultimately led him to self medicate with alcohol and drugs before he committed the crime. His trial included many shortcomings in his defense and questionable involvement by the court. Many friends and family are raising funds to pay for a psychological evaluation and legal assistance that can form the basis of his request for re-sentencing. Right now he is trapped in prison under a life without parole sentence. We need to make this right. 
 
Hasani has atoned for his mistakes and today is a mature 47-year old brother, partner and son, a vastly different individual than the scared and substance-using teenager who committed an impulsive and terrible fatal shooting decades ago. He holds much promise for helping society upon his release. He is quite simply an exceptional human being who deserves a second chance.
