Save Our Heritage - Hartley’s Village

Don protégé
Hi my name is Stephen and I am Chair of Hartley’s Village Residents Association (HVRA) in Liverpool, and I am fundraising to enable suitable restoration of key roads and embankments in line with the restoration of Hartley’s Village.

Hartley’s village is a notable example of Victorian industrial philanthropy and urban planning established in 1886 by Sir William Pickles Hartley the founder of Hartley’s Jam. The design was groundbreaking and encompassed safe factory buildings along with quality housing and amenities for his factory workers and their families.

The village featured tree-lined streets with names like Sugar Street, Spice Lane, and Cherry Avenue, reflecting the ingredients used in jam making, and central to the village was a communal square equipped with gardens, tennis courts, lake and bowling greens, promoting a sense of community and well-being for its residents.

Unfortunately, as manufacturing and production was moved to London and in particular during the 1970’s, many of the original amenities such as the gardens and recreational facilities were lost or had fallen into disrepair.

The original houses are still inhabited and the HVRA was formed in 2009 by local residents dedicated to preserving the village’s historical character, and within 2 years had the village successfully designated as a Conservation Area of historical significance.

Following on from this success HVRA went on to ensure that the remaining structures within the village were recognized for their historical and architectural significance, most notably the former factory’s engine house and chimney, the dining hall, and the main entrance which have now all received Grade II listed status

Today while honouring the village’s rich heritage, we are pleased to announce that we have been working with the Centaur & Barclay Property Group (C&BPG) and their restoration contractor who are in the process of wonderfully restoring the remaining buildings, through making period sensitive and sustainable improvements and restoration to the bring them back to their former glory.

C&BPG have kindly offered to carry out the restorations across the rest of Hartley’s Village roads and embankments through offering free time, drawings, expertise, labour and heavy plant and machinery to complete the necessary restoration if HVRA will fund the materials required to complete the restoration at a cost of £55,000. The estimated cost of the works is £320,000, so as part of their social value C&BPG are offering 83% of the total restoration cost.

Please help us to raise the £55,000 through donating any amount big or small and help HVRA save part of the city’s great industrial heritage for now and future generations. Thanks from us all at HVRA!!
