BACKGROUND:
In November 2019 Hannah pinched a nerve in her right shoulder/neck area. Within days her right hand and lower arm were numb and painful. In the months to follow this spread to her whole body. Hannah longs to be a healthy, pain free 16 year-old. She so wants to get back to being able to move, speak regularly, care for herself, see family and friends, travel, read and write stories, and get back into doing school. All things she has not been able to do for over a year and a half.
Hannah has been impacted her whole life by Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS, a connective tissue disorder), and in 2019 developed bad Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS , burning, chronic pain) in her right arm, left leg, abdomen, and extreme skin sensitivity with touch and most clothing, and gastroparesis (extreme issues/slowness in digestive system),...but there is hope! In February 2021 Hannah started treatment in a pain program at The Spero Clinic in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The Spero Clinic treatment program is internationally recognized for success with CRPS and EDS pain remission. From February to July Hannah had some noticeable improvement through her treatment, but she was only able to complete part of the treatment during this time. This first round of treatment was made possible through extremely generous people who donated to help with the treatment costs. While over $40,000 was given, it was all spent during the first round of treatment.
Several issues, including seizures and passing out for long periods, kept her from continuing during that first round of treatment. Hannah needed to heal up in several ways to be able to continue. Hannah has been able to be home in Minnesota since August and has been able to heal enough to return to the program at The Spero Clinic.
In October 2021 Hannah will be restarting The Spero Clinic pain program. It is a full time outpatient program in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The standard program she is joining is expected to be 12 weeks long. The out-of-pocket cost of this 3 month program and housing rent is expected to be $46,000. This could be upwards of $70,000 if her treatment has to be extended to 20+ weeks. In the first round of treatment all of the expenses were submitted to insurance but we were only able get about 12% covered through the out of network coverage available. We are hopeful it will just be the standard 12 weeks!
