Help Fix Laura’s House

As many of you know, I have not been able to live in my home since floods from Hurricane Florence destroyed my foundation wall. I am grateful that my little rabbit and I were able to escape to safety. Later that day, the fire department condemned the house and cut all utilities.

I need your help to live in my home again. Unfortunately, homeowner’s insurance doesn’t cover flood damage. I have not purchased flood insurance since my home is, according to the deed, “not located in a special flood hazard area.” After the incident I registered with FEMA, but days later I was told I am not included in the “designated disaster area.”

Many thanks to my generous friends and the four Durham congregations who have already given or promised help. This is a hopeful start, but it will take an estimated $30K to replace the foundation wall, the hot water heater, and the HVAC system. This is an enormous sum for anyone, but especially for a preschool teacher transitioning to elementary teaching.
