Help Us Feed Bwindi Kids Uganda
Don protégé
Update: Our fundraiser is now closed, however, we continue to send sponsorship funds. Please contact us for instructions on how you can send your financial support to Ruth (the head of the orphanage) directly, or consider donating to Carol's fundraiser Orphanage in Uganda that is for the same orphanage.
Thank you very much for your donations! We are increasing our goal from $2,500 to $3,500 to include the donations that we are receiving from past visitors to the school.
We respectfully ask if you would consider sharing our fundraiser with a message of support and, if you are able, making a donation.
One C$25 donation provides one meal for 120 kids - roughly equivalent to these comfort foods/activities that we enjoy: 2 months of Netflix, 1-2 bottles of wine, 8 bags of cookies.
Donations of any size are gratefully welcomed and for every $60 raised, a fabric face mask will be sewn and donated to Michael Garron Hospital Toronto #MGH1000Masks Challenge .
Jill Ash is listed as the beneficiary because the funds cannot be transferred directly to the school's Ugandan bank account (see Requirements to Withdraw ). The funds have to be deposited to a Canadian account that Jill opened for this purpose. The funds will then be sent by bank transfer to Stanbic Bank. We are all current or retired employees of a major Canadian bank (CIBC) and will receive a good foreign exchange rate and will pay no bank transfer fee.
Visit our website or read below to find out more about why we're so passionate about supporting these children, and why now.
Why these Children?
Jill, Sue, Lesley and Penelope travelled in the Pearl of Africa, Uganda, with Gorilla Bookings Uganda and went gorilla trekking in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
We took a Community Walk with Ruth, including a visit to the Ruhija Vulnerable Children School where 120 orphaned children live and attend free primary school. Jill and Sue have continued this relationship by sponsoring orphans Teddy and Sylvia so that they can receive secondary school education.
Why Now?
The Bwindi communities and this school are 100% reliant on tourism funds: receiving a small amount from gorilla trekking permits sold by the Ugandan Wildlife Authority; and from donations made during the Community Walk.
With the global pandemic, there are no tourists. The main sources of income working as gorilla guides, porters, or in hotels are gone. There are no generous stimulus packages or emergency financial and social assistance programs such as those we benefit from in our countries.
The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has warned of a hunger pandemic particularly in countries identified as already facing "crisis-level food insecurity" - this includes Uganda.
Please think about helping us to feed these children who are hungry by donating a portion of the money you might spend on comfort food/activities. Raising $2,500 will provide one month's worth of posho (cornmeal) & beans for 120 children.
