Help Fatma and her family escape the hell of Gaza

I am Nadia AlHassanat, born in Gaza during the First Intifada. For the past seven years, I have been living in Belgium, where I work as a theater teacher at a children's theater in Ghent. However, my heart remains deeply connected to my homeland, especially to my sisters Fatma and Amira, who still live in Gaza with their children.

On October 7, our world collapsed. At the outbreak of the war in Gaza, we received the devastating news that our youngest brother, Abdullah, had been killed in an Israeli airstrike. Since then, we have been living a nightmare.

Fatma, with her daughters Maryam (8) and Yusra (4), as well as our sister Amira, have so far survived the relentless bombardments. But life in Gaza is an endless fight for survival. No one is safe.

Fatma speaks about their life in Gaza:

*I am Fatma AlHasanat, 42 years old, living in Nuseirat refugee camp with my daughters Maryam and Yusra. Our sister Amira also lives with us.

Life has always been a struggle, but now it has become unbearable.

Yusra, my youngest, suffers from severe epilepsy and autism. While her condition had shown signs of improvement, the constant bombardments have drastically worsened her health. She cries all the time, becomes aggressive, and harms herself out of fear. She desperately needs specialized medical care and proper nutrition, but these are unattainable due to the siege and lack of resources.

We fled to Rafah to escape the bombings, but we faced death again there. We decided to return to Nuseirat, but during our journey back, Yusra went missing three times. She doesn’t understand the world as other children do and requires constant care.

Maryam is deeply traumatized by what she has seen and experienced. She has lost friends, suffers from anxiety attacks and nightmares, and her dreams of becoming a pilot now seem unreachable. Even small wishes, like having a slice of watermelon, are impossible to fulfill.

Our nights are filled with fear and tears. I barely sleep two hours a night, and Yusra even less due to her condition. We have no home, no food, no medicine, and no safety anymore.*

Why we need to escape:

The border crossing to Egypt at Rafah is currently closed, but we want to be ready to leave Gaza as soon as it opens. My sisters and their children deserve a chance to grow up in peace and safety.

Evacuation costs and requirements:

To leave Gaza, we need €5,000 per adult and €2,000 per child. Additionally, we require financial support for temporary accommodation in Egypt and Yusra’s medical expenses. Our goal is to raise €20,000 so we can act immediately when the border crossing opens.

Ik ben Nadia AlHassanat, geboren in Gaza tijdens de eerste Intifada. Al zeven jaar woon ik in België, waar ik werk als theaterdocent bij een kindertheater in Gent. Toch blijft mijn hart altijd verbonden met mijn thuisland, en vooral met mijn zussen Fatma en Amira, die met hun kinderen nog steeds in Gaza wonen.

Op 7 oktober stortte onze wereld in. Bij het uitbreken van de oorlog in Gaza kregen we het hartverscheurende nieuws dat onze jongste broer Abdullah was omgekomen bij een Israëlische raketaanval. Sindsdien leven we in een nachtmerrie.

Fatma en haar dochters Maryam (8) en Yusra (4), evenals onze zus Amira, hebben de voortdurende bombardementen tot nu toe overleefd. Maar het leven in Gaza is een eindeloze strijd om te overleven. Niemand is er veilig.

Fatma vertelt zelf over hun leven in Gaza:

*Ik ben Fatma AlHasanat, 42 jaar, en ik woon in het vluchtelingenkamp Nuseirat met mijn dochters Maryam en Yusra. Ook mijn zus Amira woont bij ons in.

Ons leven is altijd al zwaar geweest, maar nu is het ondraaglijk geworden.

Yusra, mijn jongste, heeft ernstige epilepsie en autisme. Hoewel haar toestand eerder leek te verbeteren, hebben de voortdurende bombardementen haar gezondheid enorm verslechterd. Ze huilt constant, is agressief en verwondt zichzelf uit angst. Ze heeft dringend medische zorg en voedzaam eten nodig, maar door de belegering en het gebrek aan middelen is dit onmogelijk.

We vluchtten naar Rafah om aan de bombardementen te ontsnappen, maar daar werden we opnieuw met de dood geconfronteerd. We besloten terug te keren naar Nuseirat, maar tijdens die reis raakte Yusra drie keer vermist. Ze begrijpt de wereld niet zoals andere kinderen en heeft voortdurende verzorging nodig.

Maryam is diep getraumatiseerd door wat ze heeft meegemaakt en gezien. Ze heeft vrienden verloren, lijdt aan angstaanvallen en nachtmerries, en haar dromen om piloot te worden lijken onbereikbaar. Zelfs kleine wensen, zoals een stuk watermeloen, zijn nu onmogelijk.

Onze nachten zijn gevuld met angst en tranen. Ik slaap nauwelijks twee uur per nacht; Yusra nog minder. We hebben geen huis, geen eten, geen medicijnen en geen veiligheid meer.*

Waarom we moeten vluchten:

De grensovergang naar Egypte bij Rafah is momenteel gesloten, maar zodra deze opengaat, willen we klaar zijn om Gaza te verlaten. Mijn zussen en hun kinderen verdienen een kans om in vrede en veiligheid op te groeien.

Evacuatiekosten en benodigdheden:

Om Gaza te verlaten, hebben we €5000 per volwassene en €2000 per kind nodig. Daarnaast hebben we financiële steun nodig voor tijdelijk verblijf in Egypte en medische kosten voor Yusra. Ons doel is om €20.000 in te zamelen, zodat we direct kunnen handelen zodra de grensovergang opengaat.
