Eric Allen. He is one of the most outgoing people I have ever known. He is many things: a husband, son, brother, uncle, advocate, veteran, comic book creator...the list could go on.
Eric grew up in Delaware, joining the Army after high school and returning to his home state after completing his service. In 2008, Eric married Laini and they started their life together with their pets, living in N. Wilmington until a few years ago when they moved to South Carolina.
This January, Eric discovered a small lump on his neck. After having it removed in March, the biopsy came back, it was cancer. Anaplastic thyroid cancer.
By March, Eric noticed his voice sounded a hoarse. He went to the doctor and they confirmed that the tumor was back and there pwere spots on his lungs as well.
Anaplastic thyroid cancer is one of the fastest growing and most aggressive of all cancers. It is also known as undifferentiated thyroid cancer because the cells do not look or behave like typical thyroid cells.
While overall survival statistics are discouraging – with an average survival rate of 6 months and approximately 1 in 5 alive after 12 months – it is important to note that there are long-term survivors.
While these are discouraging statistics, we believe Eric will be one of these long-term survivors.
Eric has always been the one to help others, advocating for what he believes in and listening to others when they need it, now it is our time to help Eric.
As Eric and Laini face the many challenges ahead, both of them have had to put work on hold. As we all know, with cancer comes huge expenses and unimaginable stresses. We are asking for your help to allow Eric to be able to focus on his treatments and for Laini to be able to focus on being there with him while going through treatments.
