Help Colten receive his bone marrow transplant.

Colten is a 29 year old, otherwise healthy, young man. So it came as shock to everyone when he was diagnosed with Acute Meyloid Leukemia. He went to the walk in clinic for bleeding and swollen gums. After failed antibiotics, the doctors performed blood work and a CAT scan, which ultimately led to his diagnosis. He was immediately transferred to Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo and started receiving chemotherapy the very same day to start attacking this very aggressive type of cancer.
After 21 days of chemotherapy Colten had a bone marrow biopsy on May 12th where his results came back at 7% blasts (cancer cells). They were happy with the progress and released him from the hospital (after almost a month) to continue healing at home. He went back for a follow up biopsy on May 19th where his numbers came back at 0% blasts! Colten’s body is responding to treatment, which is such an encouraging sign.
After sending his labs to the doctors at the University of Minnesota they determined that Colten has 2 genetic mutations. MLL rearranged and NRAS.
What does this mean?
It means that because of these genetic mutations, his form of cancer is highly aggressive and has great possibility for relapse. The doctors have ultimately recommended for him to receive a bone marrow transplant (BMT).
This next part of his cancer journey will be the most difficult and this is where we ask for your help. Colten and Katie will have to temporarily relocate to Minneapolis, which is 3 hours away from home. He will receive a bone marrow transplant, which will land him in the hospital for another 30 days with the total treatment lasting around 100 days. Since there are still strong restrictions in place due to Covid-19, Hope House is closed and Katie will not be able to be with him in the hospital. She will have to take leave from her job and rent an Air B&B or apartment in the cities to stay at while Colten receives his treatment and when he is in outpatient recovery. We hope to help ease some of the burden of their monthly expenses so they can focus on Colten’s healing.
If you have had the pleasure of meeting Colten you know how giving and generous he is. He is the one who never hesitates to lend a hand, never asks for anything in return and makes you laugh in the process. Through this whole journey, he has never complained or needed sympathy, a true example of bravery. Now it’s our turn to help him the way he has helped so many.
It is without hesitation that we believe the power of prayer and modern medicine will have Colten back on his boat fishing in no time.
