Help Chad Bridge His ALS Journey

  • "Eldest"
My name is Vickie, and I am writing about my oldest son Chad. "Eldest" is the nickname I gave him at a young age. This title was for the first born. With that title it held the significance of strength, courage and being an example to his younger siblings. Who could have ever imagined it would be with the battle of ALS where he would have to find his greatest strength and courage?

  • "Rythm"
Chad was born in 1982 with all the hopes and aspirations before him. He was a dynamic child. From the time he came into the world, he embraced life with force and exhilaration. He was a boy of great energy and curiosity. Chad also developed the mastery of language at a very young age (hence his nick name "Chadder Box" ha, ha). As he grew, like many children, he enjoyed music and found the heart of "rhythm". This rhythm not only gave voice to music, language and writing, it catapulted him as an extraordinary athlete. Chad has always been gifted with a charming and natural confluence in his social settings. His presence always captivating, whether humorous, moving or subdued. He lit up every room!

  • "Silence"
In 2018 Chad shared concern about his leg. He noticed it especially after playing basketball. He could not quite identify the issue, but his step "was out of step". The root cause was not diagnosed until 2019.
On that day, Chad, his Dad and I were in the neurologist's office. The neurologist informed Chad that his diagnosis was ALS. Chad was only 37. At that time, the only part of his body that manifested this diagnosis, was the limp in his gate. He was overwhelmed with tears, cresting to the full "but would not give slip". We could see he was mustering all the courage he could possibly have without falling apart. He still had so much life ahead of him. He has family, friends and a beautiful daughter (only five at the time), with which he adores with every ounce of his being. How could this be? For his life was like a beautiful symphony. He was only halfway through his song. This song that comprised a myriad of tones and melodies, that echoed the story of his life. But now, it will be the stealth and cruelty of ALS that will silence this beautiful symphony. One note at a time, cell by cell, internal communication will give way like the dissipating light of a shooting star.

  • " Bridge"
  • The songs he once sang,
  • he no longer can muse.
  • The legs that triumphed in sport,
  • he can no longer use.
  • The hands used for labor,
  • he no longer will give.
  • The arms of his embrace,
  • he will no longer bridge.

But with your "arms of support", we can build Chad that bridge.

This fundraiser will aid in the financial and emotional support that is needed for his care. Chad's faithful and loving companion Christina has been caring for Chad. She does not hold a job as Chad needs full time care. We could not be more grateful for all her love and support. They're currently living in a very tiny studio along with Chad's daughter Summer. As Chad's health continues to deteriorate, he will be needing a different home, vehicle (van for wheelchair), and medical expenses to be met. By the grace of God, he has still been able to get to his second-floor studio with his cane, but this is extremely dangerous. As stated in the beginning, Chad is fiercely courageous and independent, he never asks for help. But with ALS there is no bargaining, and there comes a time in all our lives when we all need help. I'm sure Chad would be so encouraged and relieved by your support. If you like, please feel free to leave a message for him also.
Thank you with all our heartfelt gratitude!
