Hi, I’m Olivia Chao Delfert, and I founded The Little Wind Phone Project in June 2025. We’re a 501(c)(3) nonprofit creating healing spaces by installing Wind Phones in parks, gardens, and other natural settings, providing quiet spots where anyone can pause, reflect, remember, and find comfort after loss.
A Wind Phone is a simple, unconnected phone placed in a quiet outdoor space. It isn’t hooked up to a phone line; it’s a symbolic way to speak to a loved one who has passed. Visitors can sit, reflect, or share memories. Inspired by the original Wind Phone in Japan, these spaces provide a gentle, accessible way to process grief and connect with emotions.
Why I started this project:
Grief touches all of us – through illness, loss, or life’s toughest moments. I first discovered the original Wind Phone in Japan while looking for ways to cope with my father’s illness. I even tried it using a plastic pink play phone my daughter had. It was surprisingly healing. Recently, with my mother diagnosed with ovarian cancer, I’ve felt waves of grief again and deeply understand how powerful even small, accessible ways of finding comfort can be. A Wind Phone doesn’t replace professional support, but it provides a quiet, restorative space for anyone coping with loss or life’s difficult moments.
Our first installation:
Our first Wind Phone will be installed at Reflection Park , the first all-natural burial ground in Montgomery County, Maryland. This is just the beginning. Our vision is to bring Wind Phones to parks, gardens, and natural spaces across the country, creating accessible spaces for reflection and healing wherever people need them.

- Cover the design and production of this first Wind Phone, each carefully crafted in Rockville, MD by Bluestone Woodwork , a custom woodworking company.
- Fund startup costs so we can expand the project to other communities.
- Create accessible spaces that bring comfort, reflection, and connection to people navigating grief.
- Support the illustration and production of a children’s book on grief, helping young readers understand and process loss in a gentle way.

$2,500. This will be enough to make our first Wind Phone a reality and kick off the project nationwide.
