Help Ali en zijn moeder Sundus in haar strijd tegen kanker

Stel je voor: je moeder vecht al jaren moedig tegen kanker, en je kunt haar niet bijstaan, behalve vanop afstand. Dat is de realiteit voor Ali, die 4 jaar geleden zijn thuisland moest ontvluchten en nu in Nederland woont. Zijn moeder Sundus, 61 jaar en moeder van drie, heeft jouw hulp nodig.

Het verhaal van Sundus

In 2017 kreeg Sundus voor het eerst de diagnose borstkanker. Na zware chemotherapie en de amputatie van één borst werd ze kankervrij verklaard. Maar in 2020 kwam de ziekte terug — dit keer aan haar andere borst. Weer volgden ingrijpende behandelingen en operaties, terwijl ook corona haar herstel ernstig bemoeilijkte.

Toch gaf Sundus niet op. En opnieuw werd ze kankervrij verklaard.

Maar eind 2023 sloeg het noodlot opnieuw toe: er werd een tumor in haar alvleesklier ontdekt. Ze onderging chemotherapie in Irak, maar haar toestand verslechterde snel. Familie en vrienden verzamelden 35.000 dollar om haar naar een gespecialiseerd kankercentrum in Jordanië (https://www.khcc.jo/en ) te brengen, waar ze de best mogelijke zorg kon krijgen.

Daar bleek de situatie ernstiger dan gedacht. Er waren ook tumoren in haar lever en ruggengraat, die in Irak over het hoofd waren gezien. Ze kreeg chemoradiatie en behandelingen om haar verzwakte organen te ondersteunen. Later kon ze de rest van haar behandelplan in Irak voortzetten, mede dankzij nóg eens 20.000 dollar die vrienden en familie in Irak bij elkaar brachten.

Hoop keert terug

Begin april 2025 kwam eindelijk positief nieuws: de tumoren in haar alvleesklier, ruggengraat en lever zijn onder controle. Sundus eet weer, kan weer lopen en krijgt weer kleur op haar gezicht. Maar tijdens de laatste controle kwam er wéér een klap: twee kleine tumoren in haar hersenen.

Het goede nieuws: ze zijn in een vroeg stadium en kunnen goed behandeld worden met een operatie en aansluitende chemotherapie.

Het slechte nieuws: deze behandeling is alleen beschikbaar in Jordanië, en de kosten zijn opnieuw torenhoog.

Waarom we jouw hulp nodig hebben

Familie en vrienden hebben alles gegeven — ruim 100.000 dollar in totaal. De rek is eruit. En toch is deze operatie van levensbelang. Sundus heeft nog een kans. Een echte kans op leven en op een toekomst waarin zij haar zoon Ali — na al die jaren gescheiden — uiteindelijk weer zorgeloos in de armen kan sluiten.

Ali probeert vanuit Nederland te helpen waar hij kan. Hij heeft 88 dagen gelopen om hier veiligheid te vinden. Teruggaan naar Irak is voor hem onmogelijk en levensgevaarlijk. Zijn grootste angst is dat hij er niet bij zal kunnen zijn als het ergste gebeurt. Maar zijn grootste hoop? Dat zijn moeder deze strijd wint en ze elkaar uiteindelijk weer kunnen omhelzen.

Imagine: your mother has been fighting cancer for years, and you can't support her, except from a distance. That's the reality for Ali, who had to flee his home country 4 years ago and now lives in the Netherlands. His mother Sundus, 61 years old and mother of three, needs your help.

Sundus' story

In 2017, Sundus was first diagnosed with breast cancer. After heavy chemotherapy and the amputation of one breast, she was declared cancer-free. But in 2020, the disease returned - this time in her other breast. Again, drastic treatments and operations followed, while corona also seriously complicated her recovery.

Yet Sundus didn't give up. And again, she was declared cancer-free.

But at the end of 2023, fate struck again: a tumor was discovered in her pancreas. She underwent chemotherapy in Iraq, but her condition deteriorated rapidly. Family and friends raised $35,000 to take her to a specialized cancer center in Jordan (https://www.khcc.jo/en ), where she could receive the best possible care.

There, the situation turned out to be more serious than expected. There were also tumors in her liver and spine, which had been overlooked in Iraq. She received chemoradiation and treatments to support her weakened organs. She was later able to continue the rest of her treatment plan in Iraq, thanks in part to another $20,000 raised by friends and family in Iraq.

Hope returns

In early April 2025, positive news finally arrived: the tumors in her pancreas, spine and liver are under control. Sundus is eating again, can walk again and has regained color in her face. But during the last check-up, another blow came: two small tumors in her brain.

The good news: they are in an early stage and can be treated well with surgery and subsequent chemotherapy. The bad news: this treatment is only available in Jordan, and the costs are sky-high again.

Why we need your help

Family and friends have given everything — more than $100,000 in total. They’ve run out of steam. And yet this operation is vital. Sundus still has a chance. A real chance at life and a future in which she can finally hold her son Ali — separated after all those years — in her arms again without a care in the world.

Ali is trying to help from the Netherlands where he can. He walked for 88 days to find safety here. Going back to Iraq is impossible and life-threatening for him. His greatest fear is that he won’t be able to be there when the worst happens. But his greatest hope? That his mother wins this battle and they can finally hug each other again.
