Help A Gazan Family Evacuate & Survive

Hi there,

My name is Jan Hashmi from Brooklyn, NY, and I’m sponsoring this fundraiser for the Shwaikh family. In just a short amount of time, I have become well acquainted with them personally and can feel their deeply profound love for each other and fellow Gazans. Their family is full of dreams. Dreams of growth, dreams of joy, dreams of peace, and dreams of freedom.

I want to share a bit about their family as well as their goals through the words of their son, Mohammed, as follows:

“My name is Mohammed Shwaikh and I'm 29 years old from Gaza City. A little bit about myself: I am an MBA recipient and I did my schooling in Sudan. I became a part-time lecturer in Sudan, following in my father's footsteps as he was a professor at Palestine Technical College. I decided to leave my work as a lecturer to work on a new project with a group of Jordanian investors. This project established an integrated medical center in Sudan where I was the administrative director.

Very unfortunately, when the war in Sudan began in April 2023, I narrowly escaped death more than once until I was able to leave and return to Gaza the following month, May. Little did I know I would be coming home to face death once again, this time a war in Gaza.

In these six months of the current genocide occurring in Gaza, my family and I have seen incredible devastation and countless massacres. We were displaced from our home in Gaza City at the beginning of the aggression as we were being threatened, and as a result of this displacement, we are now in Rafah at the southern border with Egypt.

My sister, Nouran, who is supposed to be on the verge of finishing her third academic year of medical school, is now unable to do so as her university was completely destroyed along with all the hospitals where she was supposed to do her clinical years. She loves life and is waiting, dreaming of the day that she becomes a successful doctor who will be able to help those around her. The war has taken her dream away. I wish to support her in recovering and accomplishing this dream.

On the 13th of October, we were officially displaced from Gaza City to Rafah, at the southern border of Gaza and Egypt. We headed to a house sheltering many displaced people. The aspects of our entire lives changed, we lost the essentials of life! In these six months of the current genocide occurring in Gaza, my family and I have seen incredible devastation and countless massacres. We were suffering from the scarcity of food as well as water for drinking. My brother and I wait long times to get a little amount of water. Additionally, we face many difficulties in providing the necessary medications for my parents who are suffering from diabetes and hypertension.

We dream of regaining safety, we dream of being able to let our eyelids rest without fear or anxiety, and we dream of surviving this genocide. We dream to enjoy peace once again and to continue the paths that we were forced to stop upon.

My goal today is to raise enough funds to safely exit my two parents (Atef and Hanan), two sisters (Ghoufran and Nouran), and myself (Mohammed) out of Gaza and into Egypt as well as to secure any needed accommodations as we transition into this new chapter of our lives.
