Help 9-year-old Conor Battle Bone Cancer and purchase prosthetic leg.
In September 2021 Conor’s parents got the news no parent ever wants to hear when Conor was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer in his right Tibia bone. Conor is currently being treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) in Manhattan and has already gone through several months of chemotherapy. On 12/13/21, he had a partial amputation of his right leg to remove the tumor and a Rotation plasty where the lower part of the leg is reattached with the ankle joint which will be what is replacing what was his knee.
Conor faces a years’ long recovery and rehabilitation as well as several more months of chemotherapy at Sloan Kettering. He has had some setbacks requiring additional surgeries and hospitalizations for dangerously low blood counts & high fevers, for repair to the incision and then had a heavy wound-vac to wear for two months, as well as a surgical lung biopsy which thankfully was negative. And, of course, the side effects of chemo are very harsh. Conor has many emotions and can't yet figure out how to deal with all that's happened to him yet. He is afraid to go back to school and be made fun of, for looking so different.
Despite all that, he is mostly a happy little guy with great flashes of humor and is an expert at Lego building (when feeling well enough) – a favorite has been Ninjago. Eventually, he will be fitted with a prosthetic lower leg and will have to learn to walk again. Conor and his family live in Tuckahoe/Eastchester, NY. So, in addition to uncovered medical and related expenses, there is the cost of parking and tolls for several trips to MSK each week.
Before his diagnosis, Conor was very active physically; he loved to run, play tag, zip around on his scooter, play soccer, ride his bike, and go sledding. In the summer, he loved being in the swimming pool, and just last summer started to have fun jumping into the pool with his brother and new friends. In order to do some of the things he loves, like jumping into the pool, walking on the beach and going in the ocean, he will need a unique water-proof prosthesis which is not covered by insurance. Our hope is that Conor will once again be running and playing outdoors with his twin brother Casey, kicking a soccer ball, swimming and sledding.
