Helen Caswell Medical Expense Fund
Donation protected
Our dear friend and colleague, Helen Caswell, was recently diagnosed with an advanced stage of lung cancer.
Helen has never smoked, and this news has been devastating as well as totally unexpected. Helen was first diagnosed in mid-November and is currently exploring all options for treatment that will begin shortly.
The Need
Due to Helen’s medical condition and treatment she is not able to work full time resulting in a serious financial burden on her; her medical plan deductible alone is $7,000 per year. The GoFundMe account donations will be used primarily for her medical care costs such as copays, premiums, medication, treatment and transportation. In addition it will be used for her day to day needs as they arise.
Who started this Fundraiser?
My name is Rebecca Vaidman and I have known Helen over 50 years. We grew up in the same neighborhood in Modesto, California, met in the 3rd grade, and became best friends for life. (In those days I was Becky Suderman.) Both Helen and I moved away from Modesto after high school but remained in close contact throughout the years. I moved back to Modesto in 2012. I am part of a community of Helen's friends and supporters who care deeply about her.
How You Can Help
Our funding goal of $40,000 is to assist Helen in her medical treatment as well as living expenses during periods when she will be receiving treatment and may not be able to work.
The need is urgent. Because Helen's medical plan is a high deductible plan, she must pay all costs of her treatment until she reaches that deductible. This includes prescriptions, tests, scans, appointments, consultations and all procedures. A recent example is that Helen had to pay $186 out of her pocket for a simple inhaler. The $7,000 deductible starts over again in 2019 so it is very possible that she would have to pay up to $14,000 before her health plan would begin to cover her costs.
How the Funds will be distributed to Helen:
Since Helen lives in Salem, Oregon and I live in Modesto, California, I have opened a bank account at my local Wells Fargo Bank into which the proceeds of the GoFundMe donations are deposited. This account is linked to her bank checking account and funds are easily transferred to her account as needed. She has named me as one of the trusted individuals who will handle her banking and pay her bills should she be too ill to do so. I Please know that every donation received will go directly to Helen to as you intend.
Please know that any gift, no matter how small or large, is extraordinarily appreciated and will make a huge difference in helping Helen in her care and recovery.
Thank you in advance and thank you for sharing this page further.
