Heather’s Fight Against Breast Cancer

If someone would have told me a year ago my life would ever be unhappy, that fear would stare me in the face, or my world was going to be torn from beneath me, I would have told them they were crazy. I experienced the joy of motherhood when my first born, Bodhi Earl Edward Russell, was born less than a year ago. Life was amazing and joy was my best friend.

Now here I am 11 months later, at the age of 25, after experiencing the happiest day of my life giving birth to my son, I am facing the devastating reality of something called Ductile Carcinoma. This is a Long story with lots of details, decisions, heartache, and with a brave face, I have decided the best decision to insure the best prognosis for my new family will be a double mastectomy.

My family history includes the diagnosis of breast cancer of all of the women on my mothers side of the family. Instead of choosing a conservative treatment, I have decided to move in a direction that won’t be the easiest, but it will insure seeing my precious son grow up without the fear of breast cancer darkening my doorstep again.

It is with a humbled heart to ask a favor of my friends and family, near and far. The medical bills will be extensive. Working will not be an option for me for a couple of months. Holding my boy will also be limited. I am going to have to rely on the love, generosity, help and prayers of all of you willing and able to help in any of these areas.

✨Update for everyone✨
Yesterday (August 6, 2019) I found out that during surgery they did take all my lymph nodes out of my left arm. When my pathology came back the cancer they found in my lymph nodes was completely different than what was in the mass I could feel. I was originally diagnosed with DCIS but 2mm out of the 6mm they extracted was HER2+. HER2+ is a very aggressive cancer, which is only seen 1 in every 5 women. This also put me from STAGE 0 to STAGE 2. But thankfully they got it out before it could spread any farther. As of now I know I’m going to have to undergo chemo and possibly radiation. My fight isn’t over! But this terrible disease is going to be!!
