Heart for Capiz Typhoon Haiyan Relief

Heart for Capiz -- from relief operations to rebuilding lives -- now launches its "Light by Sun, Light a Life" Mission.

Light by Sun, Light a Life Mission

"A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal."
"• Steve Maraboli, Life, the Truth, and Being Free.

The feedback we gathered from the victims we have reached has given us a better idea of what more they will need in the short term. Thus, we conceptualized another project to help with the rehabilitation efforts.

Some relevant facts:
· Capiz has more than 800,000 people in 473 barangays (village).
· Many of the residents of these barangays are poor, and have no access to alternate power sources.
· Without our help, most of the people in these barangays will have a dark (literally) Christmas and New Year.
· Many of the houses of the barangay residents have been destroyed. With no artificial light, they have to finish all tasks before sunset, including cooking. Worse, the sun sets early at this time of the year. Thus, even for those still with homes, cooking a meal is an ordeal. Having a warm dinner is next to impossible.

What we propose: Bring solar power to the barangays and establish community kitchens.

In every barangay, we will set up a solar power station and community kitchen. These are the major components of the set-up:
1. Solar panels "“ These will generate electricity from sunlight.
2. Deep cycle battery "“ This will store energy generated from the solar panels. This is most suitable for this set-up because it stores more power and discharges power more steadily.
3. LED lamps "“ These are the most energy-efficient artificial lighting available.
4. Bio stove "“ Unlike most stoves, this stove efficiently uses biomass "“ such as twigs, scrap wood, even dry leaves "“ that are readily available abundant in rural areas.

The end result? Each barangay would have a communal area with free renewable power for lighting and for charging small appliances. In this area, the residents can cook their meals properly. Their children can read and do their homework. They can charge their radios to listen to the news, and their mobile phones to communicate with the rest of the world. In general, the community can gather and support each other.

Sponsorship (per barangay):
Solar power station: USD 1,000.00
LED lamps: USD 100.00
Bio stoves: USD 400.00

With your continued support, we believe we can make this happen.
Thank you.
