Harley's Heartwarming Rescue
About 48 hours ago, I did not have any pets... Now, I am pretty sure that this beautiful dog chose me to be her human.
3 days ago, I found this dog as I was driving down the street in my neighborhood. She was really thin and was trying to get in a neighbors trash can. Although she was really thin, I could see that she had either recently given birth or was still pregnant, so I wanted to help. She was very timid, but eventually trusted me to let me give her food and water. Based on her demeanor, lack of identification and weight, I figured it was safe to assume she was a stray. I had to leave, but upon my return I don't see her for a day and a half, so I figured she was gone.
As I walked out Friday morning, guess who had returned! Since she had come back, I wanted to at least see if I could find out if she was chipped or if she belonged to someone. Surely nobody would abandon such a beautiful, sweet animal.
I did my best to keep her around and keep an eye on her so I could 1) search for the puppies 2) make sure she had some food and water 3) attempt to find her owner. My very generous neighbors all stepped up in a major way to help me keep her safe and happy. They brought over an extra dog crate, a dog bed, some food, collar, leash and treats so she had all the basic needs met. Despite super heavy rain, a neighbor went with me to walk through the neighborhood searching for puppies. We didn't have any luck finding them, but at least we tried. By the end of the day, the dog and I had built up enough trust to where she allowed me to feed her by hand and eventually pet her. She slept outside and hung around, so we had started to bond.
I named her Harley Grace (because her face looks like a Harlequin mask and she was here by the grace of God).
I hadn't really decided to keep her, but seeing that she had a noticeable limp and not knowing her medical condition, I wanted to get her checked at the vet. Eventually she got into the car and we went to the vet. The diagnosis was that surprisingly, overall she is pretty healthy, but they told me that she has heartworms. It is likely that she passed them on to the puppies and they didn't make it. Heartworms will eventually kill dogs if untreated, but it is an expensive and long process to treat. I want to keep her, but if I can't get help, I'll have to give her to a shelter or the Humane Society so she can hopefully be treated there or at least pass in peace.
I am asking for your help to fund her heartworm treatment, fix her leg and get her other vaccinations so she can live a long happy life.
Anything extra after treatment costs will go to a pit bull rescue shelter.
