This fund is meant to help parents have one less thing to worry about over Christmas break and for children to be able to at least start the year fresh and with a hot lunch. During the year, parents who have negative balances receive a call once or twice a week with what they owe, a burden no one wants , especially at Christmas time. I’ve learned so much speaking with the food service offices for Virginia Beach and Norfolk public schools. It seems that the best way to go about this project is to gift money to each individual school we want to help and the principal can either pay down the “principal’s account” or turn it over to the cafeteria manager so that they can apply it to children’s accounts that need it the most. The principal’s account is essentially and overflow account that a principal can put a child in so that even if they are overdrawn, they don’t have to have an “alternate lunch.” But even those accounts have limits. The amount of money raised will determine just how many schools we can “gift” money to.
