WWII Sub Vets Memorial @ Chicago
Donation protected
Crash Dive Base, USSVI. (United States Submarine Veterans, Inc.) together with USS Chicago Base, USSVI, has undertaken a project to build a memorial for submarine veterans. It will be placed in the city of Chicago, along the Chicago River, near the Lake Shore Drive Bridge. Our creed states that we are to "Perpetuate the memory of our shipmates who gave their lives in the pursuit of their duties while serving their country. " We are a 501 C-3 charitable organization. Any and all donations are gratefully accepted, and all donations are tax deductable as allowed by law.
Several years ago, we took a challenge from a World War Two combat submarine veteran, to not forget Pearl Harbor and Pearl Harbor Day. Because of that challenge, we discovered it has been largely forgotten that during WWII, 28 submarines had been built in Manitowoc Wisconsin and did their "sea trials" on Lake Michigan. After acceptance by the Navy, they entered the Chicago River under the Lake Shore Drive Bridge, near downtown Chicago, transiting to Lockport Illinois, where they were then loaded onto a special floating dry dock, and transported to New Orleans, Louisiana, before going off to the war in the pacific. Four of those twenty-eight 'boats' were lost in combat with all hands.
Our memorial will help the public become aware of this bit of almost forgotten history, and to honor those men that made up the crews of those submarines, while remembering Pearl Harbor and WWII. We also dedicate this memorial to all United States Navy submariners, past, present and future.
Thank you for your consideration.
