Hello! My name is Millie, I am 15 and currently studying for my GCSEs at The Island Free School on the Isle of Wight.

Recently, after going through a challenging (but fun!) national selection programme, I was fortunate enough to be one of the 30 British applicants nominated to study the International Baccalaureate at UWC this year, and the first to be selected from the Isle of Wight, but I need your help to get there...

I was ecstatic to be nominated to UWC Pearson in Vancouver Island, Canada - it was one of my preferred choices due to its extensive marine science and global sustainability programme.  I will be learning and living alongside students from different nations and cultures from around the globe, which is what makes going to a UWC such an amazing, life-changing experience.

More than 90% of students attending UWC Pearson are on scholarships, selected on the basis of merit from 150 countries around the world. Reflecting a policy of deliberate diversity, many students are from regions of conflict and frequently from challenging socio-economic circumstances.

‘UWC Pearson is one of 18 UWC colleges around the world and provides emerging young leaders and change-makers with an intense, rigorous and inspiring experience designed to shape them into transformative leaders with the tools, commitment, courage and networks to effect lasting, positive change in the world.’

I am so excited to take up this opportunity, except, I need your help! UWC aims to award students who most need it with scholarships, and due to the extensive range of income in applicants’ families, with many students coming from very deprived backgrounds across the globe, I was awarded a 50% bursary.

Whilst this was brilliant to be offered, and really made it possible for my family to explore options around how to fund this amazing opportunity, we will not be able to finance my attendance to Pearson without further financial aid. On top of school fees, the travel, visas and other additional costs for Pearson just comes to too much.

Therefore, I have set up this fundraiser page, along with the team fundraising walk2uwc page, in the hope that I will be able to gain the funding necessary to attend.

To try to raise funds, other UWC nominees and I will be walking, cycling or running the distance from the UWC headquarters in London to the UWC College in Singapore.  We have chosen this college because it is the furthest campus from London.  It is 8,341 miles and Google maps says it will take 112 days.  We are excited and determined to do it!

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

A bit about me!

It has been a dream of mine to attend a UWC for sixth form since a family friend suggested that he thought I would be interested in both the school (he only mentioned Atlantic College initially) and their values, as someone who is eager to explore our wider world.  I feel very fortunate to have been offered the chance to experience a sixth-form education that aims to develop the young future change-makers of the world and to join an adventure that aims to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.

I am so grateful to have been nominated for UWC Pearson and hope I can raise the funds to go and study with fellow students selected from around the world, broadening my understanding about different nationalities and cultures, expanding my horizons and making extraordinary connections along the way.

Being from the Isle of Wight, I have grown up by the coast, which has given me the opportunity to become interested and involved in marine life. I have been a member of my local sailing club as well as the Brighstone Sea Scouts & Explorers and am extremely interested in the conservation of the coastal ecosystem that both islands (the Isle of Wight and Vancouver Island) share.

UWC aims to take students partly out of their comfort zones in terms of which colleges applicants are selected for and I feel as though the choice of Pearson was completely right for me. This college is halfway across the world and will throw me into a completely different study and living environment; the International Baccalaureate program that all UWC students follow will be challenging, however, the coastal campus will allow me to further explore my curiosity about marine conservation and global sustainability, and give me the opportunity to bring what I have learnt back to my local community and to build a path which will hopefully allow me to make a real contribution to the world.

A bit about UWC

UWC (United World Colleges) is a global education movement that makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.

Central to the ethos of UWC is the belief that education can bring together young people from every background on the basis of their shared humanity, and to engage with the possibility of social change through courageous action, personal example and selfless leadership. To achieve this, UWC schools all over the world deliver a challenging and transformational educational experience to a deliberately diverse group of young people, inspiring them to become agents of positive change in line with UWC’s core values:

 - International and intercultural understanding
 - Celebration of difference
 - Personal responsibility and integrity
 - Mutual responsibility and respect
 - Compassion and service
 - Respect for the environment
 - A sense of idealism
 - Personal challenge
 - Action and personal example

UWC has 18 schools on 4 continents, teaching the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma as their formal curriculum while also emphasising the importance of experiential learning, community service and outdoor activities.

UWC college students are selected from more than 150 countries. Selection is based on demonstrated promise and potential. In accordance with the UWC ethos that education should be independent of the student’s socioeconomic means.

UWC fosters a lifelong commitment to social responsibility and, to date, it has inspired a worldwide network of more than 60,000 alumni, who believe it is possible to take action and make a difference locally, nationally and internationally.

An education independent of socio-economic means
UWC believes in deliberate diversity and the importance of education being independent of the student’s socio-economic means. Currently, over 80%of National Committee-selected UWC students in the IB Diploma years receive either full or partial financial assistance.

A  voluntary-run system selects students worldwide through national committees
UWC students are selected based on potential through UWC’s unique national committee system: a network of more than 3,000 dedicated volunteers who promote the UWC movement, find, interview and select students in more than 155 countries. Through a wide range of strategic partnerships with governments, educational organisations, youth organisations, orphanages and refugee camps, UWC reaches a high proportion of students who would not otherwise have access to high quality academic programmes.

Making an impact
A UWC education is the beginning of a lifelong journey guided by the UWC mission to contribute to a more peaceful and sustainable future. To date, UWC has inspired a worldwide network of more than 60,000 alumni, working and acting across the globe in a vast spectrum of areas towards a more peaceful and sustainable future.
