Help Gerardo’s journey to be a US’s Neurologist

Hi, my name is Gerardo Luna-Peralta, I’m a medical student and i'm in my 6th year out of 7 years of training at Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima, Perú. I’m also an orphan since I was 10 years old, and right now I am in charge of paying for everything related to my cost of living, studying and academic projects, with the help of some relatives and more recently from other people. More on my story in the next lines, but first I want to detail what I need to finance.

I am fundraising to be able to pay for my academic projects. So far, with the help of a lot of people I was able to raise 1487 dollars in this GofundMe, and it allowed me to present a scientific abstract in the American Academy of Neurology's Annual Meeting 2024 in Denver, Colorado; and 6 scientific abstracts in the American Academy of Neurology's Summer Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Now I need to finance a student exchange that I won at 1st place at my Faculty. It is a 1 month program from the University of Rochester in New York. I also need to finance my STEP 1 exam that I plan to take very soon.

More especifically about the student exchange to the University of Rochester, it is going to cost a TOEFL exam (245 USD), plane tickets to NYC (700 USD), and the stay for 1 month (700 USD) in NY near University of Rochester.

More about the STEP 1: 3 years ago I had the dream of studying my residency in the US, but I didn’t have the resources nor the sufficient knowledge to be able to pursue that path, so I started learning the material for the STEP 1 that I found on the internet on my own. Right now, 3 years later, I would say that I am ready to take it, but I haven’t been able to afford it yet. The exam costs 1350 USD and I am planning to take it as soon as possible. I'm doing everything in my power to raise the amount of money needed to afford it.

More about my life: I was born in Lima, Perú, and my parents named me Gerardo Martin Luna Peralta. When I started medical school at 18, I had already experienced a lot in life: I was an orphan since I was 10 years old. When I was 7, my father died from a presumed stroke, which was a couple of months after my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Soon after his passing, my mother decided to move with me and my brother to Trujillo, a city in the northern part of the country. Three years later, I was orphaned as my mother succumbed to metastatic breast cancer and lung failure. Nobody assumed custody of my brother Alejandro and me, so we lived alone in a small apartment in Trujillo’s suburbs with our cousin Cynthia. She helped us with food and necessities, even though she was a university student, and I will be forever grateful to her for not leaving us alone. In our apartment, we could hear shootings almost every day, and now and then we found out that the local gangsters killed someone else. When I was 15, I witnessed someone getting shot in the head a couple of meters in front of me. More about my work: this 2025 I have been elected for the role of president at the Scientific Society of my Faculty: the Scientific Society of San Fernando, the first and oldest medical student society in the country. My experience relies mainly on data analysis in vascular neurology and neuro-immunology, and research in rural and under represented areas. I've been awarded multiple prizes in national scientific congresses, and I've participated in 3 US Conferences as an abstract presenter. I am also the founder and current president of the Student Interest Group in Neurology (SIGN) at my Faculty, associated with the American Academy of Neurology; and the Neuroscience Interest Club. I am also the Academic Coordinator at a student club called “Ayudantía de Fisiopatología y Semiología” or “Pathophysiology and semiology’s Assistantship”, in english, where we teach and mentor collegues from younger years in our Faculty.

Here's a photo of me interviewing a hypertensive 89 year old gentleman from a rural town in Chincheros, Apurimac. He suffered from cataracts in his right eye, probable dementia and chronic lumbalgia. Rural research is a big part of my journey as a researcher. Being part of 3 scientific projects on peruvian rural areas so far has allowed me to learn so much about my country, and it has allowed me to meet a lot of people that have changed the way I see public health.

Here's a photo of me in Atlanta for the AAN Summer Conference on Autoimmune Neurology. I loved learning from the best of the field in the world, and I was very glad when I presented the work of so many people from Scientific Society of San Fernando at the abstract salon!

Hola, mi nombre es Gerardo Luna-Peralta, soy estudiante de medicina cursando el 6to de 7 años de formación en la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos en Lima, Perú. Soy huérfano desde los 10 años y actualmente soy responsable de cubrir todos mis gastos de vida, estudios y proyectos académicos, con la ayuda de algunos familiares y, más recientemente, de personas solidarias. Más adelante contaré mi historia en detalle, pero primero quiero explicar para qué necesito financiamiento.

Estoy recaudando fondos para poder cubrir los costos de mis proyectos académicos. Hasta ahora, con la ayuda de muchas personas, logré recaudar 1487 dólares a través de este GoFundMe, lo que me permitió presentar un abstract científico en el Congreso Anual de la Academia Americana de Neurología 2024 en Denver, Colorado, y 6 resúmenes científicos en la Conferencia de Verano de la misma academia en Atlanta, Georgia. Ahora necesito financiar un intercambio estudiantil que gané ocupando el primer lugar en la convocatoria organizada por mi universidad. Sobre el STEP 1:

Por ello, empecé a estudiar por mi cuenta el material del STEP 1 que encontraba en internet. Ahora, tres años después, considero que estoy listo para rendirlo, pero aún no he podido costearlo. Nací en Lima, Perú, y mis padres me nombraron Gerardo Martín Luna Peralta. Cuando ingresé a la facultad de medicina a los 18 años, ya había vivido muchas experiencias difíciles. Perdí a mi padre a los 7 años debido a un presunto accidente cerebrovascular, pocos meses después de que mi madre fuera diagnosticada con cáncer de mama. Tras la muerte de mi padre, mi madre decidió mudarse conmigo y mi hermano a Trujillo, una ciudad en el norte del país. Tres años después, quedé huérfano cuando mi madre falleció debido a un cáncer de mama metastásico y fallo respiratorio. Nadie asumió la custodia de mi hermano Alejandro y de mí, por lo que vivimos solos en un pequeño apartamento en los suburbios de Trujillo con nuestra prima Cynthia, quien nos ayudó con comida y necesidades básicas, a pesar de ser una estudiante universitaria. Siempre le estaré agradecido por no dejarnos solos. En nuestro vecindario, escuchábamos disparos casi a diario, y de vez en cuando nos enterábamos de que los pandilleros locales habían matado a alguien. Cuando tenía 15 años, fui testigo de cómo una persona recibió un disparo en la cabeza a pocos metros de mí. Más sobre mi trabajo:

En 2025, fui elegido presidente de la Sociedad Científica de mi facultad: la Sociedad Científica de San Fernando, la primera y más antigua sociedad de estudiantes de medicina en el país. Mi experiencia se centra en el análisis de datos en neurología vascular e inmunología neurológica, así como en la investigación en áreas rurales y poblaciones subrepresentadas. He recibido múltiples premios en congresos científicos nacionales y he participado como presentador de resúmenes en tres congresos en Estados Unidos. También soy fundador y presidente actual del Grupo de Interés en Neurología (SIGN) en mi facultad, asociado con la Academia Americana de Neurología, además del Club de Interés en Neurociencias. En la siguiente imagen, estoy entrevistando a un señor de 89 años hipertenso de un pueblo rural en Chincheros, Apurímac. Él sufría de cataratas en su ojo derecho, probable demencia y lumbalgia crónica. La investigación en zonas rurales es una parte fundamental de mi trayectoria como investigador. Participar en 3 proyectos científicos en áreas rurales de Perú me ha permitido aprender mucho sobre mi país y conocer a personas que han transformado mi visión sobre la salud pública.
